Following in the foot steps of works such as Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy, it is now confirmed that Doom will be next video game to be turned into a theatrical event. According to Universal Pictures, "Doom" will premiere on August 5, 2005 in US movie theaters with international releases planned for the same month.

A brief description of the plot indicates that the movie will maintain the "hyper-kinetic, kamikaze style" and take the viewer to the far corners of the galaxy with "a fully-realized vision of a dark and disturbing future". The set and story will be based on the latest version of the game, Doom 3.

Written by Dave Callahan the movie is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and John Wells ("The West Wing", "ER"). Actors are not named yet, but are rumored to include The Rock ("The Scorpion King") and Karl Urban ("Chronicles of Riddick").

The game was a "violation" of my faith (I played it.. and I didn't feel comfortable that was for sure) enough. Need I want to see it as a movie? hell no..

Because I want to be nit-picky.. They've worked out that hell is now somewhere in the galaxy? how curios...

Oh well... life sucks for another month next year

Tomb Raider wasn't great and this will suck too. The RE movies weren't bad, not great either.

FF: TSW was just, um, fucked in the head.

This'll never work out, they had a Deus Ex and God-know-what-other-games movies planned, but they didn't get through...

And I remember reading something about a Pac-Man movie... Yeah...

they had a HL mov-ay planned as well, although they may have waited for HL2 to be released first. If this mov-ay ever comes out, I'll definately see it, dunno if it will be good, but I'll see it.

I don't think it's possible for a movie based on a game not to suck, and vice versa. It's one of the immutable laws of physics, or game design, or something.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

Especially because in games you can have a 5-7 hour single player game, maybe more. You can have 5 minute cinematics and 40 minute long action blurbs, you can't do that in a movie without having as much plot as... "I Robot".

like said above..res evil was the only game gone movie that was a good transition..

if they make a doom movie it will suck..

you can't make a movie about a game like doom and pull it off..it's just not posssible...

As for the FF movie..it wasn't that bad...just too many folks wanted it to be about a game that was already out..not a complete new story..

and it was a bit of a disamppointment because no chochoboo's or magic...which is all ff no matter what anyone says..

They might be able to turn Doom3 into a movie, but it would need a lot more narrative and such. What makes Doom3 such a great game is you are experiencing it, and controlling it. That does not necessarily make for a good movie.

true... but AVP was basically the same thing, and they managed to make a movie about that.... although they had the aliens and preditor movies before that, so maby that one is an exception

What's the betting that (depending on how well the game does) they will eventually release a Half-Life movie.

I just have a feeling that someone is going to pull that out of the hat...

Apparently there is already a "Driver" film in development and a "Duke Nukem" film in development. So i bet something else is bound to pop up...

...however i think the closest to film any game should come is to have their ingame FMV movies played my real people, like in the C&C games and
Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight. :p

my guess is that it will be the same sort of story line. They have to try and think of some reason why these mutated monsters appear and that seems the be the only reason they can come up with that is realistic. (Humans getting mutated by chemicals)
