1) can someone direct me to a good tutorial on uv mapping for 3ds? I thought I'd just google it but did not find anything useful.
2) when uv mapping and choosing faces to map. What setting can I change in order to make the face change colors to let me know what faces are selected and which are not?
I am determined to learn how to make blank uv maps so I can texturize them to complete the skinning process. TYIA.

Killasmods has some cool tutorials for Mapping on its site. Its hosted here at revora

There for gmax though, but im pretty sure they'll be useful for 3ds max. Other than that I dont know of anyone others. As for the face colour, no idea at all, i've never used 3ds max for long enough to figure out how it works.

Well the modeler I worked with used to give me mapped images of the skins, blank. Than I could texturize them. I was just wondering if anyone familiar with 3DS Max knew how how he did that.
