Petroglyph Working on a Star Wars RTS
Wednesday, November 10, 2004, 06:37 | Cypher
That's right. The rumors about Petroglyph first title have mentioned something about a Star Wars RTS, and now it's official.

As a result, we will have new live-action and animated TV shows over the next few years, and I think there's a bright future there for games based on these new properties as well as original "Star Wars" games like a new real-time strategy PC game that Petroglyph is developing for next year. This game will take the (real-time strategy) genre in a new direction and will balance gameplay between the hard-core gamers who buy these games and the broader audience that's familiar with the "Star Wars" brand.

This quote was taken from a Reuters Q&B with LucasArts president Jim Ward. So there you have it, Petroglyph's first title is a new, original Star Wars RTS. And we just know that these guys are going to beat the previous Star Wars RTS attempts into dust. Personally, I can't wait for an actual official announcement with some eye candy and more info.

Well i expected a lot, but not this :S
BTW for those of you who do not know, Petroglyph consists of WW staff that quit EAP or where fired.

I didnt expect Petroglyph to do Star Wars. I expected them to come up with a new original RTS (much like they did with C&C) rather than a franchise. What worries me is it will balanced between Hard Core and Star Wars fans. This just screams out to me that it will be really simplistic with lots of recognisable characters/ships etc. No doubt it will be an excellent game, although I think they would have been better off doing a more original idea.

They might do something special; you never know. I would have preferred a new Dune RTS to be honest.

It's hard to get excited over a big brand name like Star Wars, especially after all the bilge games they've made.

I believe the idea is that it's almost guaranteed to sell, as it's Star Wars, so it will be a good way for Petroglyph to make money, and then be able to think about their own ideas/projects.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

This was kinda expected for me for the following reasons:

- Petroglyph announced their participation on 2 gaming events in the beggining of the year. One of them had no EA. It had LucasArts, Sony and something else. LucasArts became the main suspect.
- Other rumours spreaded on webbies and DENS also pointed to a Star Wars game.

I think making a star wars game is a brilliant idea, firstly Star wars has a HUGE fan base, so they will be able to tap into that. Not only that but if the game is succesful (and by god it should be!) they will get quite a bit of renown I should hope.

If they just jumped into some random project with factions that nobody had ever heard of or whatever, with no games under their belt people might be a bit dubious to shell out on it...

but with "from the makers of Empire At War" under their belt, they should have enough followers and funding to build whatever they want :p

This game looks VERY nice. One of the best things to come out of the SW universe. Shame most of the games did the license no good whatsoever *remembers Dark Forces, Episode 1 and Rebel Assault 2 with a shiver*
