If you want to make a mod of the movie Aliens - Don't.
If you want to make a mod with aliens and mariens - Do.

Basing a mod on a movie, TV show or anything else will lead to trouble. The biggest problem being the person who owns the copyright to Aliens saying "You making me look bad - im going to sue you". The smallest being "Please re-name your mod".
If you want to make a mod about Resident Evil don't call it Resident Evil, don't use a T-Virus. Do call it Evil House, Do use the M-Viri.

This also leaves you with space to change or escape from the original story line and make your own, more unique mod.

Or you can do something small to change the name. For example, Henford was given a warning by EAP not to call his mod Command and Conquer Fallout, so he renamed it to Command n Conquer Fallout

As your using RA2 i don't think you need to. RA2 was made by westwood, which no longer exists, so theres no-one to care about it's use. Wait till someone complaines before you spend time changing stuff.

Also, it's "C&C" - I don't think you can copyright that. Where "Command & Conquer" is copyrighted.

True FS-21 but..

All of the C&Cs were called Command & Conquer, never C&C so in theory your not impeding on Copyright...

Besides, heaps of stuff uses C&C (here's a few)

C&C Universe of Games!
C&C Yachts - Performance Sailing Yachts
C&C Sailing Association
C&C Aviation Flies into Mt. St. Helens
C&C Technologies' Website
C&C Sutlery

So yeah, your chances of getting sued are extremely slim -_-

so if I wanted to make a mod on "Star Wars" I cant call it star wars, and I cant use the original character names, and names of other objects, so I would have to re-name every thing, or is it just the title?

well-- you would have to get permission to... just like the battelfield 1942 mod did... they had to in order to use the original names of the units and vehicles and what not.

We had to get permission from chaosium.com for ours =P

It's best to just be original, even if you base it cloase to something.

Thats not entirely true. Elvis is dead and if you use his music in a commerical without paying anyone you can and will be sued. This is because someone owns the rights to his music. Someone (most likely EA) owns the rights to Red Alert and most likely all Westwood products.

Makes you wonder about imperial assualt, the use star wars in the logo. How do you ask George Lucas permission for that without paying him?

Predator is copyright of Universal Studios I think. In theory the word is not copyrighted, neither is Alien. You could call a character in your mod a Predator, and he can be a hunter and shit, but he can't be the one from the films. Same goes for aliens.

I believe George Lucas is more lax than you mgiht think. Check the Troopers mod for UT2004. I doubt they paid him, but they use the Star Wars universe completely.

And Elvis' relatives will sue you because copyright laws give royalties to the family for up to 50 years after death. He ain't been dead quite that long.

 I'm in the clear, I emailed Rareware about me ripping off their game(I prefer to call it "tributing") no reply, so I don't think they're about to sue

What about if I´m doing a home-usable only MOD?I mean, one did for enjoying it, neither for selling nor for massive publishing on a web... ^_^

I´m doing a MOD called ZION WARCRY, and I allways add a copyright of each thing that has It, I only add a © Angel Ramos (me) for the things I´ve done from scratch. Is it illegal?

Yes, You will say "if you´re not thinking of publishing it, why you add the © to those things?", easy, thatt way WB or the Wachowskys, or Geof Darrow, or whatelse can´t say that I´m taking profit of their job , and what about if they want to take the mod and make it theirs?, well, no problem ,I only ask 2 things...

first:the things I´ve designed from scratch are mine and the © of them is mine :umad:

second: please, once you have it , put it in an expert MOD developer team so it will look better than I could do

Is unreasonable what I´m saying?
