I have played both firewarrior and Dawn of War but the thing that gets me about the games is that in Dawn of War the bolters are automatic and the ammo isnt explosive but in firewarrior the bolter isnt automatic and the ammo is explosive.

what one is correct

(p.s. sorry if this is off topic)

Frewarrior is right, bolters fire a caseless shell with a tiny amount of force, just enough to make the shell leave the barrel, then the shells own propellant ignites and launches the bolt into the target. As soon as the bolt detects a density change (as in from air to flesh) it detonates, INSIDE the target.

Essentially its like taking a normal cased round and moving the propellant into one component, and adding some simple mechanical crap and an explosive... its pretty much a fire and forget missile, imagine them to be armed with ut2003 rocket launchers of sorts ;)

:) these topics seem to appear on alot of WH40K forums every now and then :p

still it's a bit odd, as almost ALL fluff images and art clearly show the bolters as having a shell-ejectionport and cocking lever on the side and they do eject shells..

guess this is a slight matter of conflicting fluff..

so i'd take the golden middle road on this: i'd rather see them as heavy calibre semiauto guns/assaultrifles .75calibre (and UP, if i'm not mistaken) which fire a kind of highexplosive armorpiercing grenade...

kinda like the M203 grenadelaunchers fitted under M16, AR15 and M4 modernday assaultrifles> a highexplosive, with a small propellant charge (in the wh40K universe encased in an armorpiercing slug) fired chemically and the empty shell is ejected... In short a .75cal rocketpropelled grenade - RPG

;) just my 2eurocent

if i remember correctly, bolters fire in 3-4 round burst of explosive tipped "bolts" that explode upon penetration

Dawn of War was more right. I mean, yeah they explode when then penetrate, but it's hardly a rocket launcher style explosion.

But in Dawn Of War they dont explode at all and they seem to shoot more like a fully automatic rifle rather then in 4 round bursts.

You know I think the bullets explode inside the targets.. which means you wouldnt see a bolt round burst inside an enemys tummy eh?

guess that's also a matter of interpretation of the Wh40K universe..

i'd say the bolters can be switched modes, > burst or semi-auto

would be a really logical option to me i guess... :p

Taken from the new Codex: Space Marines:

============
THE HOLY BOLTER
============

998. model bolter: Godwyn pattern with ammo counter, sinister/dexter locking mechanism and sickle magazine containing 30 rounds of .75 calibre bolts with diamantine tips, depleted deuterium core & mass reactive detonators. Fires in 4 round bursts.

The bolter is the preferred weapon of the Adeptus Astartes. Each bolter must be fasioned by hand, either in the Chapter's own armouries or on a forge world of the Adeptus Mechanicus. A bolter is a rare and treasured weapon; but in the hands of a Space Marine it is a divine instrument of the Emperor's wrath.

There is a picture accompaying the text, and it is of the bolter that the current 3rd/4th Ed marines are wielding.

Well a lot of GW imagery draws heavily fromm popular culture and real-life events, as you know.

I think that the AK-47 was used as a design guide for many of the Imperial weapons, most notably the Autogun (in some of Jes's concept sketches, he actually says this too). Kalashnikovs fire in 4-round bursts, or single-shot modes (IIRC). I guess this was also applied to the bolter. I *think* the Lasgun also fires in SSs or 4-round bursts as well?

Well I think it's all up to the chapter, I mean they can probably make their own customizations for each chapter..

The lasguns has singleshot mode and auto-fire mode, but this prolly depends on the home worlds of the Regiments. At least the Tanith have this kinda lasgun settings.

Oh and our bolters have 3 shot bursts :p

Well yes, there are lots of different patterns of each weapon. I just meant the "ideal standard", in the same sense as that C:SM excerpt.

Ak47 and Ak74 assaultrifles fire in full auto and single shot mode :p

the US Colt M4, Ar15 and M16 are set to single shot and 3 round burst, NO auto mode.. the M16 was modified since the Vietnam war..

:p
