think of our planet as a critical weakness in our plight for understanding....
we can`t come together as a people to live as a whole society on our one home what makes people think we can ever come together as a whole to grasp the infinite vastness of space...
if our priorities shifted to the true search of space, collectivilly there would be a shift in ideals where we are a group of billions in search of infinite truths beyond the day to day one world one life box we currently find ourselves in....
but on the lighter side these are just pondorous joys of visions yet to be told....

A unity is impossible. Besides, it's competition that gets people further - without the Cold War, nobody would ever have been to the moon!
Yeah I agree on that, competition makes things interesting

As of 1988, (my last source I can find) we had the tech to go 14% the speed of light. Equal to 300 WWII "A" bombs exploding per second using fussion drive.
(I know WWII were fission, I'm measuring energy output not tech used)
I don't feel any serious progress will happen till we can isolate the graviton particle and produce superconductive materials that function at room temp. Though exterior components are in space. Very low temp.

Wormholes and use of quantum singularities would work however, especially with Hawking's new string theory on black holes (Not to be confused with quantum string theory, which seeks to replace the standard atomic model).

What works on DS9 (if you know that), doesn't necessarily work in reality (no offense, I'm a trekkie myself).
And there could be some kind expansion to outer space, it only would take centuries or longer to at least visit 0,0001% of the galaxy (not to mention that it would take millions of years to get to another galaxy with sub-lightspeed).
If we talk about settlements in the solar system, I would expect them to exist in 100 years, latest.Which leads back to the Space elevator idea I've mentioned in another thread here.
But of course humanity would have to solve the major problems on earth first before it can put a lot of effort to colinise the galaxy!!

Problems on earth: Humanity needs to unite a one, not have these borders that stop us progressing. What does that mean? Whether we united in Fascism, communism, socialism we have to unite without capitalism. As long as everyone is out for themselves we will never unite, because it only generates hate and more problems. In our lifetime we will never see a change, i myself believe the next century will be about the collapse of capitalism into a new system where the world becomes more understanding of its problems. We will start educating our young properly. What needs to happen is people need to work together to get further rather than blowing each other up with bombs. THis world will not last much longer with 6billion+ of us on it, if we all want to survive we do need to find other planets which we can destroy over time... Or learn to respect and understand.... Which i'd prefer. Leaving it to corporations to get us into space will only slow us down by hundreds of years.
This is precisely why I say we need one person, one nation, or one group, to stand up...and ignite the flames of war and bring this divided globe under a single flag with the abolishment of all national borders.
We need a single world goverment, A single council that can decide upon and dictate global policy.
We need to be united as all the children of Terra, So that we can put aside petty ideals and strive for the greater goals of mankind. Solar System Travel, Planetary Colonization, Inter Stellar Travel, ect ect.
We're to busy watching what our neighbors are doing, and investing in weapons to destroy them, that we can't raise our heads to the sky above and set it as our absolute goal.

It's a nice idea, but it won't work because humans will never be all the same. Differences will always exist, and borders will always be there to acknowledge those differences.
I left out the part about where selective culling of the populace was also acceptable, to weed out those undesired aspects of humanit [ Greed, Racists, Catholics, ect ect ]
