Well...
I've been trying to model and skin for mods in DoW and Rome:Total war and well... after months of a frustratingly low state budget, and as you may know, modelling is not a very cheap hobby. Ii've decided to try my hand at something different.

I have experience programming C++, so I thought "Hell, why not become a coder!"I mean, it seems to be an equally challenging skill, while less demanding of the wallet
Im spending the weekend figuring out LUA, and fiddling w/ the ai, but eventually, I would like to help this team as much as I can

any starter tips?
reading the LUA tutorial, and spamming the copy/paste hotkeys in there and the RDN area.

The biggest hurdle I had was in learning LUA - the syntax was very odd and it took me ages to work out what 'self' meant

If you need tutorials or manuals they are here and here.

Try this post - about the AI - to begin, have a look around the other posts on the forum (especially the ones telling you how to set up the log files), set 'self.debug = true' in cpu_manager and then muck about with the files and try and do things and see how it works. We will all be happy to help out with any questions you might have.

Cheers and welcome,

Flenser

thanks for the warm welcome :D
I'm finding that the code is extremely familiar
conditionals and such are pretty identical in C++

LUA is very similar to C++, and at the same time, very different

Bezu.. Thanks for considering us!

We've made considerable progress since we started the project very early this year. The preliminaries started before then.

We have some amazing coding talent here: Larkin, Corsix, Flenser, and Excodrin (part-timer). We also now have 3 beta testers to ensure we get the most QA outta the work being submitted.

Recently, with the advent of the DoW v1.30 patch upgrade, the AI's preq. system determining demands for units has become broken. On Friday I chatted with my lead contact with Relic so I await a reply to see if some sort of "remedial measure" will be undertaken before the WA expansion arrives b4 mid-Sept. Dunno what else to think..

Thats where we stand.

I would love to have another LUA coder on-staff willing to give things a try, grab the latest builds, and contribute to our objectives (not too many now a s we've come very far along).

How much time can you allot to DoW AI scripting?

Welcome aboard!

TuD.
