I think microsoft will need to support backwards compatibility.
People will not want to make their entire library of games obsolete by purchasing the next console.
It's one of the beauties of the pc that almost any (if not every) game ever made for the system can be played...
indeed some of the oldies are the best (TA. Homeworld. Red Alert, Doom etc)
just the same way people will love the old games and will want to be able to play them still without having to climb into the loft/attic to get the system to play the blasted thing...
Besides, by releasing with backward compatibility there's a HUGE library of games that can be played on the system.
This will be what will tip me towards favouring the ps3 / nintendo over the 360 when it comes to buying time...
