I know some people have been complaining about their skins becoming washed out and super bright on some maps. Well I stumbled into something last night that I think might at least help the issue, but it causes another one unfortunately.

First of all, it does depend heavily on the time of day the map is set in. Dusk and Night maps have it the worst of any. Midday maps are the best. But I was testing RoR out last night on a night map and I realized that while my units were getting that annoying glowy thing, my structures were not. And then I thought, well, I exported the structures with Shadows enabled, and the units without. I think that may be the leading cause for it, as Shadows seems to not only allow SHADOW_VOLUME which casts shadows but it also calculates some shading on the model itself.

Now the issue comes in the form of enabling Shadows on units themselves. BFME doesn't seem to like you doing that very much as bleedthroughs are common. Also, it would rape resources when you had a lot of units running around.

Interesting, seems just plain old darkening the skin will have to suffice.

Agreed. My game lags enough on low detail settings (I really need a new graphics card :) ). But, it's good to know there is a way to almost fix it. Thanks!

Indeed. Unless we can get ahold of EA's export information somehow. Or an update of RenX that would allow us to resolve this issue. But that doesn't seem likely at this point.

Have you compared Wdump settings to see the actually differences in export settings?

I have not. But I know that there are some settings that appear in the WDump that we do not have the ability to set in RenX. I feel that these may have some kind of impact based on other people's methods to solve this issue just by exporting with different material settings.

I don't know if exporting with shadows enabled and then using SHADOW_DECAL will calculate the shading on the model but not cast shadows or not. I will experiment further with this later today and get back to you guys.

Well I played around with some settings and had some success and a huge head scratcher came forth. I did manage to get rid of the washed out skin on a normal infantry unit. However, look here.

Both of these units are using the exact same export settings. As you can probably tell too, they are even using the same skin.

I agree...

Check it out... I ran into something similar, though I haven't done anything at all that should have resulted in this.

Galadriel on most maps:

Galadriel in Belfalas with other heroes for comparison:

I'm sure other people have noticed this... I'm just trying to add... uhh... suspence?

We need to get this solved..

What has anyone tried to do to get this working? (don't want to re-invent the wheel!). I know Hostiles "Darken the skin Alot" method works, but there has to be something we're missing.

Well, what I've realised is with my Galadriel, she glows exactly as she does when you select her (you know, every unit glows for like, a half second when you select them) and it only happens on maps with sunny, mid-day weather (any weather-affecting spells take the glow off of her). I'm going to go take a gander at her ini file... Incase EA threw a glowing behaviour in there ;) .

But no, I haven't actually tried anything to fix this yet.

EDIT: Looking at Kelso's screenshot again as well as the Boromir posted by... forget who, I think I have a different problem. My Galadriel isn't exactly "majorly washed out". Her colours have actually intensified, though the brightness is brought up so much, it looks like she's more white than normal. This must be an ini thing.

Hey, I just found this post and i've been having the same problem and when I downloaded the elvenstar mod i noticed that they somehow got rid of boromirs glow without editing a new model as there was no boromir model in the download. Has anyone seen this yet? If there's already a solution could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.
