I've never understood the significance of birthdays either... So what, the Earth moved another time around the sun since you popped out of your mother. And congratulations with what? You didn't actually accomplish anything.

I guess people simply need excuses to get drunk and forget about their miserable lives.
It has been reported that some victims of rape, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not WAKE UP. In this catatonic state, the victim lived in a world just like their normal one, except they weren't being raped. The only way that they realized they needed to WAKE UP was a note they found in their fantasy world. It would tell them about their condition, and tell them to WAKE UP. Even then, it would often take months until they were ready to discard their fantasy world and PLEASE WAKE UP

Congratulations on surviving another year, of course. People didn't always reach an average age of 70 you know.

It's rather similar to the hispanic tradition of quizenera (oh god spelling), namely the 15th birthday of the daughter. They're both meant to celebrate becoming a woman or something.

"Quinceanera" em  And it is to celebrate the girl becoming a Women.

Really? Because I just typed 'quin' into Google and the prompt gave everything I could wish to know about quinoa, quinnipiac, quince, Quincy Jones, quinine, quints by surprise (?) and quinceañera. Maybe you just weren't trying very hard?

It is a well-known fact that time-travelling Roman elf chainmail legionaries can't spell very well.

I must say Matias, I rather like the change. I think the raised eyebrow helps.

Aw, I already miss Matias the mad hippy with his weird downfro and paedo-stache. Those look like the kind of changes you make when you have a serious meeting to go to. What's the occasion?

Convincing my ex-girlfriend to take me back. I must say though, I hadn't shaved in months before today and now it itches like crazy. Drives me insane.

Oh, I just received another occasion; I have arranged a meeting with some editors of a fairly well-known literary magazine, regarding the possibility of contributions from my brain.

Swish! If the pieces my flatmate told me about from her week interning at a literary agency are anything to go by, your work will seem to them to be an instant bestseller. Let's hope it all goes well for you, then.

I assure you, whatever you've read of mine on here was baseless nonsense. Which is why I've had it deleted a long time ago. I wish I could let you read something recent, but I really don't write in English anymore. Dutch is a superior language for imagery and meaning, if you ask me.

Curious, what are you writing about currently? Also like the change, planning on keeping it that way? :)

I write about the subconscious mind. I've recently written stories about men who encounter people that they recognize subconsciously as their long dead ancestors, about a protagonist whose manic girlfriend prevents a supernatural dream-creature from taking him away to another world by sacrificing herself in his stead, about a man who wakes up in a dark reflection of the world drawn from his personal perception of the real one, et cetera. Basically just word-framed emotion, plot only coming in second-place to provide the story with a vague guideline of where it goes, instead of being the skeleton.

Basically, the polar opposite to Kluun. :) Allathar knows who that is. That's all I aim for commercially, to be wildly different from that asshole and still be known.

As for my look, no, I have a tendency of letting myself slip down the slope again. In three months I'll look like myself again. Hairy and confused.

Ooh, so your stuff would come under the broad definition of magic realism, except based more in the conception of setting than story? That is exactly what I would love to write, but first would have to get much better at. Meh, practice makes perfect. I'll get there. If any of yours ever make it into English, I'd love to read some of what you consider your better work.
I hope I am a good enough writer that some day dwarves kill me and drink my blood for wisdom.
