Tanks

These prophetic words were spoken by Heinz Guderian, in his book entitled Achtung! Panzer!, which is the basis for modern military strategy. And he was quite correct; German tanks did win in France, even against superior numbers and technical qualitiy. Russian tanks succeeded in driving back the Germans. American tanks...well, there were a lot of American tanks.
So what is everybody's favorite tank? Personally, mine is the Panzerkampfwagen V Panther Ausf D. It was a direct answer to the Red Army's T-34, and though it appeared only in a tenth of the numbers the Soviet machine did, it proved to be rather potent.
Armed with a high velocity 75mm gun (the Sherman had a short barrelled, thus low velocity, 75mm gun and the Soviets had either a 75 or 85mm gun) which was deadlier than even the Tiger's 88mm, the Panther proved to be invaluable on all fronts. It was also highly mobile, with wide tracks. After its engine problems were (somewhat) resolved, the Panther was sent back to the front.
A German tank ace said of the Panther, after the war ended:
"A Panther could easily take out six Shermans.....but the Americans always seemed to have seven."
A testimony to both sides, I think.

Well as far as WWII tanks go I would have to say the M-3 tank. This one caught my eye one time, while watching a war movie back in the days when I was a youngster growing up. Sadly, many, many, moons ago.... So what is everybody's favorite tank? ...
Anyway, The M-3 has a side mounted 75mm cannon. Here's a peek:
http://www.wwiivehic..._medium/m3.html
'By the time 1,000 M2A1 Medium tanks were ordered in mid-1940, they were shown to have inadequate armor and armament by the events unfolding in Europe. To match the newest German tanks that had 75 mm gunes, the Ordnance Department wanted to fit a 75 mm into a M2A1. However, there just wasn't enough space in the turret. Based on experiments with the T5E2 a 75 mm M2 was installed on the right side of a modified M2A1. ...'
'... It was intended only as a stopgap tank before the M4 Shermans arrived. When the M4 started production the M3 was designated Substitute Standard in October 1941. In April 1943, they were classified as Limited Standard and in April 1944 were classified as obsolete. ...'
Quotes from WWIIvehicles.com
It's just an awesome looking tank, at least to me anyway. It's one of my favorites from that era.

They are expensive, so there were just few of them and that's why Sherman and T-34 had a chance they were cheap so many could be built
As for the Sherman it was light so many could be transported
As for the T-34 it was a very good desingn but against the modern German Tanks like Tiger II it had no chance but there were many
MY favorite WWII tanks are the M26 "Pershing"
or the Firefly
My favorite modern tank is the Leopard 2A6 the best tank in the world

The only tank to continually serve through the war from start to finish, the first to mount a 75mm weapon, at first firing HE then upgraded to the long barrelled Anti Tank weapon, nicknamed by the British as the "Mark IV Special".
Modern day though, it's the Challenger II. Nothing beats it.

The M26 Pershing did well in Korea against T-34s, and the Firefly was armed with the British 17 pounder anti-tank gun.
It should be noted that the reason the Sherman was underarmed for its role was not in any design flaw, but a flaw in tactics. The Sherman was meant to give fire support to the infantry, not slug it out with other tanks. The Americans' anti-tank tactics were to put its heavy AT guns on treads and have them chase the tanks. This requires a great deal of luck, however, to work, much like offensive anti-submarine patrols rather than a convoy system.

Armour, cross country and road performance are compareable to the Abrams, and gun is better *G*.

But for WWII, I like the M3 tank.
"Jesus didn't resurrect. He respawned."
"I hated going to weddings. All the grandmas would poke me saying "You're next". They stopped that when I started doing it to them at funerals."

However, I remember a quote from a German officer in command of a tank company. I don't remember the exact quote, but it went something like:
"One of our Panzers could easily take on three of your Shermans. However, you always seemed to have four."
I just love that quote.
