either the game's speed was at 20, or that thing is really slow firing. seems like it would be faster firing...

There was a Gauss rifle and pistol in a game Fallout 2. The gauss rifle was german desing and used magnetic field to propel the ammunition with huge speeds trough almost any obscale.

Rail Gun: Two electrified rails create a magnetic field to push the bullet. The bullet is magnetized by the electricity running through it between the rails.
Gauss rifle: A series of magnets which activate in front of the bullet and shut off/reverse polarity when the bullet reaches them, so it essentially pulls it out.
