Anyone know the theroy behind having a forum show new topics or un-read topics?

The only ways i can think of involve lots of querys, or lots of cookies. Neither of which i want to do.

Best thing I can think of is to set a bit in the database's topic list when you view it, and then mark topics as read depending on that bit. IPB does it a bit different but IPB's implementation is also a big buggy...

IPB uses a combination of cookies/database in 2.0x but uses all database in 2.1x. The upgrade should take care of the bugginess with that.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

ImmoMan, so there would be a field called 'ViewedBy' listing all the members of have viewed the topic? Then you'd also need a filed or addition to the first field for when it was viewed. If loads of members view 1 topic, that list might become huge. As it's a single bit of data, you'd have to load it and sort it. Wasteage.

It's not perfect, I know. There are several ways of doing it. Mastermind probably knows more about it than I do cause he's worked with IPB a lot more than I have...

Well the best way to learn is still to see it already done, right?

For this, i just need the basic theroy, i can research the rest myself.

I had a look at IPBs cookie, and it is huge. Not the way forward.
