That would be rather handy if you could add a poll to your topic. I don't know if that is possible with IPB, but it's an idea.

I can see a button which says new poll, it's next to new topic.

Click "new poll" instead of "new topic".
If you have already made the topic and you want to add a poll to it click "Attach New Poll", which is next to "Track this topic | Email this topic | Print this topic" at the top of the topic.
