every so often we get one about either porn, downloads or other dodgey dealings, always from a newly registered user, but each one looks identical in form and the spelling mistakes are pretty consistent

They're just spam bots. For some reason they like this forum. You're probably high on some Google search that they use or something. Believe me, the IP ban list is getting longer as days go by, as I try to IP ban each bot when it comes around.
