Judging from the last uninstall topic, I doubt anyone has shared in my experience, but who knows - maybe there are many lurkers out there like me, who have been searching in vain for an answer.

Not only can I not (exactly) uninstall Contra as easily as it is suggested on the readme, and on the boards. I also can no longer even install Zero Hour. Contra has ruined my configuration, and I have proof of it. But no clue as to how to proceed.

I had a similar problem before, but that was months ago, and I'm sketchy on the details. But I do remember that, unlike the current situation, my previous problem was on the same machine, on a different installation of windows (have since reformatted), and was one or two version of ZH ago. Back then, I couldn't get contra out of my system, no matter what contra related files I deleted. It was still playing contra without any of the contra files being in that directory structure. So the point is, I have first hand experience where Contra did not uninstall as directed - even before the current problem.

But the current problem is more troubling, since I can't even install plain old Zero Hour.

This time around, I have The First Decade. Upon first installation, Zero Hour played just fine. Then I decided that I wanted to setup each version of contra (1.02, 1.03, 1.04) in it's own directoty OUTSIDE of the Zero Hour directory tree. This way, I could get a mod swapping program to do all the file switching for me. This was the system that worked before - no manually switching, copying or deleting was every able to reverse the effects of a contra install on my system.

Here's the thing. I didn't actually ever install Contra Mod on this installation of ZH. I ran the self extracting exe's. I had the exes unzip their contra contents on an entirely different drive from my ZH game. I didn't expect, nor intend for Contra to have anything to do with ZH at this stage. I just wanted it in a place where my modswapper would later be able to reference it. I did not install the modswapper yet. I had some other things to do. Later, after dinner, I just felt like playing plain old ZH. It gave me the incredibly vague error message "Technical Difficulties / You have experienced a serious error. Serious errors can be caused by many things... yadda yadda... blah blah".

It also recorded a crashlog file in the ZH folder in 'My Documents'. The entirety of that file was...

Reason Error parsing INI file 'Data\INI\Object\assaultgeneral.ini' (Line: 'Object Aslt_GLAInfantryJarmenKell ')

So even though no contra file was ever in my ZH directory (I manually checked), it was trying to find the assualt general files.

I deleted the contra files, uninstalled everything C&C on my hard drives, and tried again. The same thing happened. Even after trying to take everything away (including the HKEY Local Machine/.../registries), everytime ZH is reinstalled, it's failing because it is looking for Contra files.

I got Filemon from http://sysinternals....es/Filemon.html. This way, I could see every read/write action taken during installation. Sure enough, even on a system with no trace of a contra big file, and a fresh installation, it tried to reference the non-existant directory on a different drive, in trying to load up generals.

When generals is installed, something gets written somewhere else. I need to know where else contra mod (either through the initialization of the .big file or through exe self extractor) writes to... otherwise I have to reformat my drive, just to play regular ZH again.

Ok. Other than that, I suppose I should mention that generals, all other C&C titles (and every other, much more graphically intensive game I have ) still plays just fine. It's just ZH. Which is really all I'm in the mood to play right now. And That I emptied out my temp directory. And That I have rolled back (and forward again) several graphics driver versions, that I have run many diagnostic tests on my RAM, CPU and motherboard.

I think that's everything. I'll reply to this post with my directx diagnostic log, so you know all you need to know about my computer.

Please help. Thanks.

Hmm....you might try to put the BIG file, scb file, and csf file in manually. That's what I do because I play a lot of mods.
(This might not be a solution for your current problem, but it might solve your future problem if you want to play mod)

1. Extract Contra file somewhere except ZH dir
2. Backup skirmishscript.scb in ZH dir\Data\Script
3. When you want to play Contra
Put BIG file into ZH dir
Replace skirmishscript.scb with Contra's one
Put general.csf into ZH dir\Data\English
4. When you finish playing
Remove BIG file from ZH dir
Replace skirmishscript.scb with original one
Remove general.csf

That's what I do.

I work alot, very closely, with the contra code... there are only 3 files in the english install. Contra.big, Skermish.scb, generals.csf (and/or russian.csf)

The assault general crash you decribed usualy comes from the contra.big being placed in the wrong folder. If it is placed in the main ZH folder or the mydocuments/ZH folder it will create this error because the .big contents are being parsed in the wrong order with the other files.

The directions in the read me tell exactly where to put all the files. Putting them elsewhere will only crash the game.

As for the un-install.. there really is nothing more than the directions in the readme. Delete the contra files and restore the 2 files that the readme told you to back up... thats it. If your game still isn't fully un-installed then you must have placed the files somewhere else.

Between now and the next polished release there should be very little new art work done. Instead the focus is on designing, testing, and fixing. the mod has always been so close to finished that its nearly criminal. I'd love to see this through to the end with a real community effort.

A friend of mine helped me with the problem, and you were right... sort of.

The thing is... I never put the files anywhere I expected ZH to find them. Remember, on this particular problem I was not installing Contra. At all. I merely unzipped it and put it into (what I thought) was a totally unrelated, unreferenceable folder to Zero Hour. And that's all I did. And that action caused Zero Hour to crash. Even after a fresh install.

The problem was (apparently) that First Decade scans every folder when Zero Hour loads up, apparently. Like, if I have a contra.big file stored (as in hiding) in a Red Alert folder or Tiberian Sun folder... Zero Hour /First Decade will still see it, and try to use it, even if it's not in Zero Hour's dir. So when I move all mod related files out of CnC (and not just CnC/Zero Hour), then it seems everything works fine.

Now, it's just a matter of finding a mod swapper that works with Frist Decade, cuz both of mine don't seem to like it.

Thanks anyways.
