Infantry:

Peasant: Armed peasants have thier value as cheap, fast build time, and slightly potent. Give a peasant a pitchfork and send him off to battle.

Peasant Archer: Simple, cheap, and shoots arrows.

Peasant Horsemen: Mounted troops trained to fight from horses. Lightly armored but rather mobile. More a skirmish unit.

Samurai Infantry: (backbone infantry)

Samurai Foot Soldier: basic fighting unit that is a qualified foot soldier. Sort of like a Uruk. After some upgrades, can be very powerful.

Samurai Archer: While all Samurai are trained to fight with swords, they can toggle between swords and bows as needed. Weaker than Samurai foot soldiers in melee, they do great as armored archers.

Samurai Calvary: The heavy calvary of the Samurai, trained to fight from horses, they are the heavy calvary of Gondor style.

Samurai Hobilars: Oddly this unit is trained as infantry who happen to ride horses to get to the battle, but do not fight on horses. The hobilar is a much used and little mentioned unit type from this era. They are infantry that can toggle mount, ride all over creation, than toggle back to troops to fight. Weak while fighting on horseback, they are trained as mobile fast response units.

Specialized Units All ninjas will be invisible units...and can climb walls like goblins.

Ninja Mercenary: A small horde of ninjas that have powerful attack capabilities but poor defense. So they are fast, cloaked, hit and run units. You wouldn't attack a bunch of samurai with them unless you were causing a distraction or it was a hit and run. Cloaked and able to climb walls, They will infilitrate your base if you don't watch. Can toggle between Sword or throwing stars.

Ninja Assasin: One simple unit who only has one goal, to kill enemy heroes. Tough defense so they survive, damage that affects heroes more than other units. A great Hero counter. They will have some unique abilities to counter heros. (Magic resistance and such...)

Ninja Archer: Ninja support units, less capable than ninja Mercenaries in melee, they can still toggle between sword and bow.

Siege Weapons: After some research I did find the feudal japanese did use catapults and a form of the balista.

I can already picture myself abusing of those units :p

I hope you can get horde mounting working better than others have.. there were always weird troubles with units doing trample damage on foot and stuff.

The solution is not allowing them to trample, these troops are not meant to fight on horseback. Very poor while mounted, might as well be fighting peasants when they are mounted. Unless I encounter issues getting the armor/weapon damage to adjust while mounted, that will be the only change. You'll see the real purpose when you see how slow samuria move after gaining heavy armor.

They will be expensive to buy, but will be valued as a fast way to move heavy armor upgraded samurai to the battlefield. The cost justifies the need of the unit along with the team needed to tend to the horses when the troops are dismounted and fighting (this team will not be seen ingame, it is assumed)

A few new unit ideas/possibilities based on further research

Tozama:
Christian Samurai- A merc unit available either by summoning power or inn that comes in, would be a offensive samurai with less health but a higher attack, would be able to convert peasents over to the user's side
Christian Missionary- A unit with a healing power and the power to increase nearby experience for allied units
Tonmoe's Decendant- Female Samurai Warior Hero, capable of the Speciality power which allows her to kill eight units per attack for a limited time

Shogunate:
Shogun- Ring hero, would be able to use the imperial decree power to disband armies into weak peasents
Tax Enforcers- Stand alone units like trolls or beserkers they are used with battalions of other units, these units steal enemy resources like corsairs while attacking enemy resource buildings, these units come with the break sword power, which allows them to disarm a unit or hero reducing their attack to something worthless, long term temporary for heros permanently for units

Fudai:
Lords- Stand alone units like berskers, these act to give health bonuses through leadership to all around them and are accomplished fighters capable of taking on atleast 2 battalions of un upgraded Samurai

Universal:
Craftmen- A battalion alternative to the porter/Builder
Westerners- A lair unit that converts player units over to their side (into lair protectors like them), must be attacked long range, or with loyalty powers active

For some reason I find the idea of tax collectors as a unit hilarious.. :rolleyes:

Sorry Chemix, not really big on any of those mentioned. Not Christians, tax collectors or lords.

Lords will just be heroes...

Christians would act as pretty much the only decent units in the Tozama forces, similar to the soldiers of rhun from BFME I, and they were in this period of Japan and did fight against the Shogun in a rebellion that could techincally be considered a part of the Tozama/ Fudai war. Tax Collectors comes from the way the Shogunate actualy defeated both Daimyos, they bankrupted them, it's a different style of play really, you don't just kill your enemy, you weaken his econemy first through taxation. Lords were just a little less common than Samurai durring this era, there were thousands of theifs under the controle of thousands of lords, making them heros makes them a bit smaller scale than they should be.

In 250 BC, women faught as Samurai warriors along with men, and since all male heroes seems kind of boring and Tonmoe's techniqu shouldn't be forgotten, though her decendant could be a good hero.

I'm just attempting to make each faction more unique and true to life, with different gameplay styles for each despite using mostly the same units.

After talking to you more and reading again, some of these units are maing sense.

The Shogun being the Ring Bearer Hero. That's actually pretty cool.
