Sometimes, I wonder where people's manners and morals went. Our ability to express ourselves in a manner which does not offend others. I question, are people stupid, arrogant, or blinded by their own judgement to actually be able to be civil? Or is it merely the fact that in the world of the internet, we can be anonymous and neglect our duties as humans. We have so many religions, beliefs, and morals in the world, but they all share a common belief. Treat others, as you wish to be treated yourself.

Where has it all gone wrong?

I come to Revora, to express my views, my opinions, and to share common interests with others. I remember a time when we were civil, understanding and considerate of others. I'm won't paint myself as a saint, I've had my fair share of arguments, but it's now escalated to this. Where we are merely throwing insults at each other, lacking even an argument. Just insult, followed by insult, followed by insult.

OK, people may have differing views. But is that justification for throwing insults around? No.

There are a lot of people in life, that I don't like. Quite frankly, I could sit here all day throwing insults around. Is that beneficial to anyone? No. Or, I could ignore them, get on with my life, and forget about those people whom I have no time for.

I ask this, of everyone at Revora. Think about what you are doing. Quite frankly, I don't want to read endless posts of insults, of endless posts of moaning about people. You have responsibility to yourself, and to others. To treat them with respect, and be considerate of how other people may feel.

Consideration goes both ways. And I don't think respect overrules the right to say when something is wrong. If something is wrong, it should be said. Not shoved under the table because people are too afraid to insult each other.

Just to complete what Immo says, of course you can say when something is wrong. But you have to know how to say it. Make sure you use constructive criticism. There is no need to flame anyone. Do not lower your level, otherwise you'll be as wrong as the situation you are complaining at.

FYI, this topic has been stickied because there is one thing that, again, must be clear.

I've seen this a couple of times in different forums, and it always happens when forums are getting more popular. The more people that are together, the more chance there is that a conflict may happen. And I think then it's the responsability of the moderators to make sure the conflicts gets solved.

Great. More lectures.

This isn't a dig at AGT in the slightest. I just don't feel we all need to be mothered and patronised. If something needs to be said, and somebody needs to be told they're a twat in no uncertain terms, then somebody's gotta do it.

Now, to be fair I haven't seen so much of this, except in the BTL where people who want to see something done about somebody are humiliated and ridiculed by everyone else with likewise access.

I take it you'll delete my Big 7000 thread because me, Fen and Ali decided to spam about a bit. :p

There is a difference between a ment insult and you and Ali fake-insulting each other.
To be honest, I don't see the need for insulting people in public (for real, not like you and Ali), it's not like it gets you anywhere. I never enjoyed being bullied and I've yet to hear of the 'victim' who did. I kinda see what GT is going to here. I also like to come here and enjoy reading posts, not dislike reading them or see unneccesary harsh insults. Of course, if you think something is wrong, be sure to say it, just do be constructive and don't flame someone 'ZOMG this mod sucks!!!1oneoneone!!!'.

The rarity with which you see these insults leads me to post what I posted. One tiff last night, and suddenly we've all gone maternal. Where was this attitude when I was still GM? o_0

There is a large difference between banter, and intentional "attacks". I did not write this thread as to be patronising or mothering anyone, I wrote it with the aim for everyone to think about their actions.

As Banshee says, you are able to speak freely. But the ability to speak freely, also comes with responsibility. With all honesty, I could come here, and say that I believe every person of non-white origin should be killed for not being "pure" and argue that my free speech allows me to say that. No doubt people would reply saying how I was racist, etc. The point being, while we have the ability to say what we want, we also have to think about what we are saying, and whether it is a good idea to say it.

This is not a lecture on how to behave, it is some advice, that I sorely hope people will take onboard when posting in the future.

This has still only come from a single row that happened between two members.

It's quite clear to me that this advice applies to some and not others. Or, that that would've been the case if it'd been posted several months ago.
As said, where was this attitude back when I was GM, and why has it suddenly appeared after an NL and a member locked horns for a brief spat, all of which has since been deleted, thus making it look like you're posting this pretty randomly out of nowhere.

While I would agree that threads and posts with only the intent to flame and troll are not good form, mountains are being made out of two peoples' molehills here. There'd been no such behaviour from those two up until that point, and a brief lapse in tact results in this, yet others around have burned mercilessly for ages before anyone's batted half an eyelid.

Sooner or later, there'll come a time when you admins have to come to a consensus on how exactly you're going to deal with bad behaviours. It seems very erratic atm.

While the motivation for this has come from a single row, I feel the problem has been escalating for some time now and I felt I needed to say something. Personally, I thought the people of Revora were above merely throwing insults at around each other, and lately it appears we've been slowly degrading into where people are just throwing insults around.

You all are pathetic, this is a forum not your life, if you feel abused by what people saw on a message bored then you shouldn't be here! end of story, go cry else were, your not gonna change anything by this, your nothing more than words, and a post count for this forum. thats what makes a forum so great you can do anything and it doesn't matter.

No, no you can't.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

But to be fair, it is of little consequence to the real world individual. That's what he's getting at. He isnt' promoting anarchy, he's just saying that it doesn't matter what you do, you haven't lost anything particularly valuable if you do it.

Look at it this way. If one of us were banned from Revora, we'd soon find something else to do in place of it. We haven't been imprisoned or anything. Same as being barred from a shop or a pub. You just go to another shop/pub. But the thing is,nobody can or will be banned, because Revora shoots itself in the foot with the other 'ideals' it holds.

Market forces, really. People vote with their feet.

I do agree that there are individuals (probably myself included) who are bang out of order. I agree that that words should be had with them. I don't agree with this sort of teacherly guilt-trip-inducing lecture thrown at everybody.

PS: Aagh! You quoted yourself blaat! Remove em quick before Kal sees!

Say a single funny line then and I'll quote you :D.

I myself have tried to be around at other forums, but apart from the ones I'm regularly on (about 5, most involve games and/or modding), not one has been really nice enough to stick around.

While being banned from Revora wouldn't be the end of the world, I fail to understand why people feel that, on the internet, their responsibilites as humans, suddenly disappears. The internet, is merely another form of communication, and we have to remembe the people on the "other end of the internet" are human beings too. Why do people feel like they can be complete tossers on the internet, trolling around, insulting everyone. I am pretty sure, if you did that in real life, you would be in a lot of physical pain. :/

I agree with you. But this is not real life. And that's what Mad's getting at. There is no consequence to the action, and therefore people can be, act and do as they like without fear of rebuttal.

If people can do something, they will do something. Even something which is socially unacceptable. Why do you think the Internet's so full of porn?

Sorry dead topic, but hey, its stickied :)

[StupidLecturingMood] Anyway, I think this is why most of us people at T3A tend to stay at T3A. There is conflict sure, but I believe most of us there are moral people... It just seems so much...Friendlier than Revora. I have jsut now dared to come out of T3A, and I think Ill be retreating soon. The good of Revora doesnt quite outweigh all the arguing over nothing and mindless fighting. [/StupidLecturingMood]
