Melodic or Symphonic Metal is basically a Metal variant which adds in a lot of melody and a lot of different instruments like Piano, and usually have female operatic vocals.

Most popular band of this style must be Nightwish.
But their definately not the only one's..
After Forever, Edenbridge, Epica & Sirenia

Power Metal as far as I know it fits as the male version of Symphonic/Melodic Metal.
Think of bands like: Sonata Arctica & Kamelot.
They sound quite simular but instead have male vocals which sound totally different.

Know any other bands like these or have comments? Reply here hehe.

Sonata Arctica - indeed, it's a great band but I am not able to listen to them too much because I don't want to get "overcharged". I like Replica and The End of this Chapter, though I don't have much albums of their's.

Vocal is pretty nice, even when male (;)) and it is something unusual when male vocal "attracts" me (think Rammstein Ash :p). And always it is nice to listen to something different :p

What about Within Temptation and Orphonic Orchestra? The latter might not be so well known but I think they aren't too bad. They have a okish to good male vocalist which is a rarity.

Their male vocalist's better than that of most of this type.

Sonata Arctica...didn't you try send me one of those, Hool? I honestly can't remember if I've heard any or not :p

Let's add Edenbridge and Evanescence here too. Edenbridge is so unknown it's criminal. As well Spellgate, who are okay but aren't as good as the big names of the Symphonic.

The best have got to be Nightwish, WT and Edenbridge, with Evanescence following close.

Oh and Hool, how the hell could you forget Lacuna Coil?

On a sidenote, Nightwish will not ever be as good again. Tarja might've been a bitch to them, but the band's pretty much nothing without her vocals. I suppose they could drag somebody else out of Helsinki Sibelius Academy to fill in, but I really don't see them ever being the same without her.

We certainly can't allow Marco or Tuomas to do vocals..that'd be the suck.

I prefer Evanescence over Nightwish, but their music is of a slightly difference style of course. Agreed with Ash on the Nightwish issue with their singer.

btw Of Infinity are nice as well, though they have only made 3 songs (one single) so far.

I agree about Orphonic Orchestra.

Within Temptation doesn't have the Symphonic Metal sound to fit in here.

Their male vocalist's better than that of most of this type.

Sonata Arctica...didn't you try send me one of those, Hool? I honestly can't remember if I've heard any or not :p

I have yet to share this with you.

Let's add Edenbridge and Evanescence here too. Edenbridge is so unknown it's criminal. As well Spellgate, who are okay but aren't as good as the big names of the Symphonic.

Lacuna Coil isn't Symphonic Metal, their Gothic Metal.
WT and Evanescence don't belong here, they belong to new gen. Goth Rock.

Edenbridge is already in here dude. ;)

On a sidenote, Nightwish will not ever be as good again. Tarja might've been a bitch to them, but the band's pretty much nothing without her vocals. I suppose they could drag somebody else out of Helsinki Sibelius Academy to fill in, but I really don't see them ever being the same without her.

I agree. Absolutely..

I prefer Evanescence over Nightwish, but their music is of a slightly difference style of course.

That's a matter of taste, and as I pointed out Evanescence doesn't belong here.

btw Of Infinity are nice as well, though they have only made 3 songs (one single) so far.

Can't say I know em.. want to get to know them though.. *cough* Share... *cough*

I don't put music into genres like that. To me, each artist has their own style. They sometimes may sound like the other though, but I don't catagorize them like that.

I agree with Blaat. But if you had to catagorize, would The Favours fit this catagory?

I don't think so, they don't sound similar to the artists' named, but that may be me. It may be another type of metal or something.

You can also try Apocalyptica, Stratovarius and less known To/Die/For which I think fit this category.

Kamelot is quite nice band what i listened the album you mentioned to me :p

The Favours sound pretty good, but indeed they're not in this category...they're more in the mainstream rock zone. Think I'm gonna jack all the songs off their site tho. :p

I didn't rate Apocalyptica much, and Stratovarius didn't push my buttons much either IIRC. Their site downloads are down atm so I can't remind myself.

Ask them for the Promo, if they're willing to send it all the way to Australia I'm sure they'll send it to you

Seen epica live.. just not really my genre. orchestra is good, but I like it less "goth" and more experimental/artistic..

Aria is the best song Orchestra did, I think. I don't like ALL Epica songs, but some just work really well like Dance of Fate and Cry for the Moon.
