Guns n Roses, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, etc... basically it's crazy 80s rock/metal. And the members had really long hair, hence the term hair metal.

As said, I don't class things in genres. I like quite some genres and different sorts of music, ranging from happy hardcore, dance, trance, electronic to some rock, symphonic metal and the likes of Evanscence, Evanscence, Within Temptation and such, as well as a lot of other things I can't be arsed to think or look up what genre they'd fit into. Just music, each unique in their kind .

Lol, she forgot she typed it, so she typed it again ;)

Classic Rock
Gothic Rock (if I absolutely must use the term...)
Symphonic Metal
Symphonic Rock
Sk8-Rock (I guess it has to be given a title :p)

I'm very choosy about bands, but this is where most of them will fit.

Someone somewhere really needs to make very strict boxes, define them all, so we all know what it is we listen to.

Does it matter? I think it's most important that the music is nice, not what kind of lable or genre people put on it..

These labels and categories serve for a purpose, to know what style the music is like, so people who prefer one artist can easily find music alike to that style...

But genres and labels are ultimately becoming meaningless - there is a distinct blurring of boundaries where one genre ends and the other starts.
I don't class artists under styles as I don't see a need to limit myself based on a simple label which is ultimately pointless. Look at the artist Soilwork, if you listen to their albums chronologically they go from Melodic Death Metal to practically rock. How do you place a genre or label on an artist which doesn't conform to any given style?

For myself, I listen to any band which catches my eye. My current favourite band - Emery - I only listened to because of the fact it had my tutor's name for a band name. So I thought it'd be interesting to see what type of music a band sharing the name of my Maths teacher would be.

3) Synthpop (think Depeche Mode)
4) Indie Rock (also put bands like Kaiser Chiefs in this)
5) Art Rock (basically progressive rock, but I just like the term :shiftee:)

Synthpop? You like Freezepop? How about Synthpunk (i.e. The Chalets (does another Synthpunk band exist?))

1) Art Rock (example)
2) Indie Rock
3) Alt Rock
4) Tuneless Rock (Rock that proves you don't need to be in tune with anyone else, or even yourself)
5) Other Rock (Ha! Take that, style nazi's!)

I can cram most of what I listen to into such vague catagories...

Tuneless is perhaps the worst thing any band can be. Spellgate suffer from it, and it's almost irredeemable...

And yes, what Holly said is the main reason we need the genres is so we can all work out other bands of a similar style that we may find likeable. If I can't stand anything hardcore/trance (and, by and large, I can't), it allows me to rule out a shitload of bands I know I'll hate. Since you can't immediately tell from a band's name what style it plays, easier to put it into a box alongside similar artists. :p
