What you'll want to do is to get rid of the ''red blob'' kinda feel it showcases, try adding some different materials . If your reference, (in this case that Avatar cartoon) doesn't show any different materials, I suggest you attempt at making more folds and logical shadows and highlights under those folds. If I look at the red parts on his shoulder, I notice they don't cast any shadows on the grey cloth (?) that lies underneath. That's the kind of thing you need to get a feel and an eye for, call it the Skinners Eye. () If you add me to your MSN I might have time to instruct you further. ffx_matias@hotmail.com
Btw, don't look to me for the greatest skinning tips, there are far better people around this place. (Windu, Nertea..)

The light grey shirt is a thinner fabric, basically a normal shirt.
The dark grey looks to be a thick fabric, say something more along the lines of wool(??? I don't know fabrics well so I'm probably wrong)... somewhat similar to a mat in consistancy perhaps...
The darker reds look to either be thick leather or thin steel. I would say that the middle guy's red armor is mainly metal from the way it reflects the light, but the other guys's red armor is very likely leather. The best armor always goes to the leaders and champions after all.
The pictures remind me alot of Samuri, who traditionally used alot of leather and lighter armor types. That's what I'd base the armor on for the most part.
That's the way I see it. The better skinners will probably have different opinions
