Well, i originally posted this topic on valarian mod studios, but they said i should ask you. The thing is, i'm looking for a way to creat a gradual transparency over my layers to make them fade into the backgrounds that i have made. I can do it using the rubber, but that takes too long for some of my photoshop artwork. I've heard from people that i know that the gradient tool can be used to achieve such an effect.....but i have found no way myself.......
....any ideas?
Photoshop help...

Kinda hard to understand what you mean. But i think i understand.
For example... You have a background layer and a render. You want the render to blend into the background layer almost as if its fading into it.
To do this, with the layer the render is on selected, go to 'Layer' 'Layer Mask' then 'Hide All'. The layer should completely dissappear. Dont worry, thats a good thing .
Now get your gradient fill tool and set your colours to defaul (black and white), short cut is 'D'. Now, click and drag from where the render was to where you want the render to dissappear. This might seem confusing .
I'll get some pics.

Ok, got pics, lets start over.
What your asking for a called a gradient mask, this is how we go about doing it.
Stage 1
You have your background and your render. Here is what i have (very basic but lets keep it simple ).
Stage 2
We need to make the layer a mask so select your layer with the render on it. Then we go to 'Layer' 'Layer Mask' and 'Hide All'. The following picture shows you where you can find this.
Stage 3
Once you have clicked on 'Hide All', the render will dissappear and your layers window should look simular to mine.
Stage 4
We need to go to our tools and pick out the gradient fill tool.
Stage 5
Now, when you click and drag a line appears. This signals how large the gradient will be or in this case how large the fade will be.
Stage 6 - Final Stage
Well, your done really. Should look like this.
Hope that helps.
