well yes they could carry heavy weights, but in the movies, Gimli's axe isn't as big as he is. In their current state, the axes would almost touch the ground when the dwarves are running around.

And even if the dwarves can carry huge weights, why would they want to carry more than they have to ? In the battle so long axe would be unhandy
Its fun, if you reach population of 250, you will get a prize
