My family has a long history of services in the armed forces, traceable back to the Crusades I think. One of my family members has died on a battlefield so I have a lot to live up too as Forest Gump said.

Demon of Ragriz, you really are an idiot were you home schooled or at a the United American Christian Facist School of Arkansas?

hmm, we got draft, and i have to say i'm pretty good at dodging it without getting in trouble as of yet. then again theres only around 30-40% of the males that have to do it every year, so theres always some reserves around.

anyway, the choices i've seen given here are not very realistic, depends on the country and the military power i guess, it seems DoR thinks drafting only happens in dictatorships where you get shot if you try to dodge.

people who gets the law after them are quite often pummeled with support from other people around the country, but no politician dares to do something about it as it would be alot of work and trouble most likely.

Do you plan on joining up then?

In my view everyone should do some sort of national service for their country, both military and civillian work should be made compulsory for a few years from the age of 18 to 21.

I believe everyone should be free to choose the job they desire to do (provided it doesn't strike with the groundlaw such as "murderer you can hire" (dictionary doesn't know huurmoordenaar) or something).

A contract killing (also contract murder or murder-for-hire),
the people doing such things are often known as hitmen or assassins.

Do you plan on joining up then?

well the fact that only abour 40% semi-randomly gets chosen to waste a year of their lives which they could have been using for education and/or making money for the country is for me idiotic. also, anyone who has not heard from the military can be called in randomly until theyre 28, if they've gotten an postponement, 33 years. if you got a family or a job where its very important that you are active all the time and you get drafted, you're screwed more or less.

service for our countries? so paying taxes and making money for our countries isnt enough? we all have to go out into the forest for 9£ PER DAY for a entire year and do nothing? its a hopeless system that takes more money than it gives.

I sort of think like the way they did in Starship Troopers and their citizens you wern't a citizen till you joined up like not allowed to vote or to carry on in education.

Realistically we want cleaver people made as officers who then will be able to lead in business and industry after the three years or have the chance to continue on.

Several quotes spring to mind

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori

"If you lived to see one day of war, you would pray to god that you never see another again."

"War is delightful to those who have not experienced it."

With intelligent people, and indeed all people, the one thing you don't want to do to them is force them into a hole in the wall or a pit in the ground to work or get shot at. You don't want to waste the creativity and potential of an entire generation filing paperwork and fighting pointless unwinnable wars on the fringes of a flimsy empire created for the purpose of keeping them there.

Patriotism is a great evil to the world in general. Patriotism benefits nobody but the ruling class of the nation you choose to give your false love for.

I disagree there, sometimes Patriotism brings together people, look at Disraelis One Nation Conservatism policy. His fear was that Britain would split in two, the rich and poor. Conservatism will only change when it has to prevent larger chance, in the 1867 (year?) Reform Act he increased the franchise and helped establish a welfare system.

This combination helped people join together aligned with a strong patrioitic view of Queen, Country and the Empire. Its better them fighting in 'holes in the ground' than them working in McDonalds or a call centre just because no one post-graduate can get a job anymore.

or as my msn has been saying for a year or so now;

"Dulce et decorum est pro Patria mori, Balatro"

if it brings the people together only to wage war on other people, it would be better to bicker and not kill more than necessary.

Patriotism dosn't always bring war, it will when it fits together with certain ideologies like facism.

Actually, I take info form schooling (public schools) and turn it into what I think fits. Usually, I just act like an idiot for fun, but I can get serious. Now, I know you can dodge a draft or join, but if you have political connections, you can bribe people so you can stay.

Well, I figure I'll be in the corps for a while before any sort of draft would start off... so hopefully I'd get a promotion due to the massive influx of recruits

Oh yes let's all "serve our country" and "bag some ragheads", and "shoot some commies", and "defend our country". Because we all know that the US military is being used responsibly by perfectly rational people who only want to "defend" America.

I hope to join the HM Royal Air Force, serve in a few conflicts, get pissed in Germany like the good old days and get a few medals all while they pay off my student loan.

Option 2. I don't feel love for the country any more than the country feels love for me. And with conservatives in power, that's not exactly much. I don't want to fight for a country, a country is a man-made construct of borders and a seat of power. Power corrupts, and borders divide, not unite. I will not fight for that.

Besides, if I wanted to, I could be in Belgium within 2 hours using only a bicycle.

alot of people thinking that military is a great way to getting their loans paid... well theres always the chance that you will need the money for prostetics, psychiatrists and other things that have been caused by the military.

the only spot i really imagine military work is if you are talented enough to get a good job, like jet-pilot or hi-ranking officer or some sort of administrative work... being a meatshield rarely pays.

I'm officer material, had the medical, done the talks they are pratically dragging me in now to sign up. I think I will be doing it.
