Here's some things to remember when making a map:

1) Drawn in a paper or on ms paint the original purpose of your map... things like starting points with red, water with blue, reinforcements points with green and map limits like unpassable meteors or moutains to plan a layout. It's important to have a vision of what you wanna do when you create a map, so your job is done faster.

2) Bear in mind, when planning, that symetric maps are easy to balance, but they are very predictable and boring and far unrealistic.

3) Realistic land maps doesn't have plain terrains. Play with the height tools and use high intensity to make the job faster.

4) Remember that each starting point demands Use the Markers at the object tools (Marker -> Player 0 blah blah blah, Player 1 blah blah blah... etc etc to make sure that your map have starting points. There are 2 markers per player. Each marker should have a faction owner and buildings from this faction close to it.

5) Play with textures when dealing with land maps. Changing it, with the difuse and specular colour and the weather can give some good lighting effects and improve the visual experience of the map.

6) Make your maps more dynamic with civilian objects and scripts, specially scripts.

Petroglyph has placed some good and helpfull tutorials with the program that may aid you in the mapping process. They are easy to read and come with pictures. Make a good use of it and good mapping!
