An interesting read I thought, about how Britain and the US unveiled plans to create a small illusion style Cloaking Device which basically renders an object/person invisible to the visual spectrum, even though the news seems a little old I thought I'd share it while it still remains on my mind :p

Of course the only problem I can see with this is that people can just possibly use heat sensors to detect the cloaked objects, but when coupled with Stealth tech, you have an improved arms weapon.

Opinions?

Wouldnt see it because its invisible. :p

What if a general marched his entire forces off a cliff by accident, or your own people shot each other because they couldn't see each other.

I'm sure the 1st Generation of devices would only be suitable on aircraft or ships. Well, actually I'd bet the first one would have to be run on an aircraft carrier off of one of its nuclear reactors and would be able to cloak a field about the size of a mouse.

This project's been confirmed as exsisting for years, and it has some great potential uses, though it'll be a while before we use em' for ground troops. Even then, I'd reckon only SpecOps units or Sniper teams would use em'.

Carrying around, of course, a rather large nuclear reactor to hide a grenade or so.

They will find a new, more efficient source of power. Just watch the films, the TV is like a crystal ball into the future. :p

I dont see how this would actually make the object invisible. I would think that if the "superlens" prevented light from bouncing off objects, it would just create a black area around the lens.

It could be very useful to sniper or assassin :p
 And I can`t image it has any value for civil uses.

Not to mention stopping crime.

Drug dealers, gang members, mafias, etc. will think twice when most of them are taken to court with a camera-recording full of evidence, but they were sure that they weren't being followed...

That's already happening, the country's called the UK and they watch their citizens 24/7. Sounds like a utopia to me :|
Of course the PATRIOT Act has already begun to give the federal government these powers, so they can spy on you so they know you're not a terrorist or one of those pesky democrats.

Isn't the term 'invisible' rubbish? How can something be invisible? What would you see when looking at it? Noting, how can you see nothing? A much better term is transparant, althoug it doesn't always apply. I can't image 'invisible' , the closest thing that springs to mind is a black hole, that sucks up the light.

Well if you actually looked up into the article you'll read about this "superlens" stuff which bends light around so you sort of have the same effect as you have when looking through water or something.

Invisible would actually be defined as this: Something is there but you cannot see it = unseeable.
Transperant is seeing throught something - like glass. So that doesn't apply here.

At one point I thought it would be like that too, but it's not.. like I said, read the article completely.

Lurking moar since 2004 2003!

I meant this in a wider perpective than just the article. But I must admitt, I have only skimmed through the article.

Do you have any conception of the power that such a technology would require? You would NOT be able to carry a device like this around. Active camouflage is just not going to happen. It would also be almost as easy to defeat as regular camouflage.

Of course it's going to happen, you cannot be as close minded as to think it won't. The question one would like to ask however is when. I would think certainly not in the next hundred years. Given enough time however anything can be done, even the unthinkable and impossible.

ARGUMENT FROM CREATION, a.k.a. ARGUMENT FROM PERSONAL INCREDULITY (I)
(1) If evolution is false, then creationism is true, and therefore God exists.
(2) Evolution can't be true, since I lack the mental capacity to understand it; moreover, to accept its truth would cause me to be uncomfortable.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

they must device a way to make all material transparent

also, there is already a rather primitive way to make things invisible (but it could work well at a large distance). there is an object, covered by a screen

____
| o |
|___|

now, there are cameras on every side, and the image they see is projected on the side opposite them. result: if you look from afar, you see the image that is behind the object, but you see it in front of the object, so the object can not be seen
