Hello,

Could someone please explain or link me to a guide to change ingame text descriptions for ROTWK?. I need to add several recruit / revive / tooltip ones. I tried opening my Language English.big and made a test change but the game crashed badly (memory low etc).

I've read a few posts about csf and str files changing in BFME1/2 but I have yet to understand how to get it working for ROTWK. It may be I have to edit both BFME2 and ROTWK English.big + Patches 1.6+?

Any help would be great as I've been searching for an hour

thanks but I know where the file is. I need to know how to edit and save it so the ROTWK reads it. If I edit and save with wordpad etc the game does not read the changes and actually reads the BFME2 Lang folder (resulting in 'missing strings for all RTOWK specific text eg the campaign).

I need a CSF or lotr.str one of these > > >

;CSF Editor A program that will enable you to edit/add strings to the game. Strings are basically the text you see within the game. This is needed if you plan on adding new units or changing the names of existing ones.

any help would be good.

Are you modding the original or using the -mod command?

don't edit the file with wordpad, it makes files that are not plain text. use notepad

Yes, you're right but I get a Game.dat error using notepad too. I'm Editing a copy of the Origional English.Big ie not using -mod. If I open and save using notepad (making one change) it crashes. If I use FinalBig to extract the ROTWK English.big and relocate the origional ROTWK it crashes.

If I run ROTWK with NO ROTWK English.big at all it loads fine but obviously there are no aditional ROTWK text. Probably becuase it's using the BFME2 English.big.

I'm missing the point here i think :p

You got me confused too.

So you use FinalBig to edit lotr.str and when you save over the original, the game crashes?

Yes :p

Since installing ROTWK I now have two English Big's..one for BFME2 (with patches etc) and one for ROTWK. If I edit a single letter of the one in ROTWK folder it crashes. Whether i use final big and save or if I extract all to the ROTWK directory and remove origional English.big it still crashes.

I'm guessing I need an editor or an explanation of how the game (ROTWK) reads the appropriate str/csf file.

I'll try checking C+C forums too as maybe uses same principal.

thanks for your efforts.

well, as a test, I just added the word 'big' after 'lonely' in Gimli's recruit tooltip. There are two of these descriptions in English.Big. So it should then read 'recruit the dwarf of the lonely big mountain'.

I did that by opening the English.big with notepad and saving as the origional file (my origional ROTWK English.big is safe elsewhere). This causes the game to crash. So then I tried extracting all the folders in English.big using Final.big. Again, I edited the above string. This time the game loads but doesn't read the new 'lonely BIG' text. It fails to read all ROTWK text (eg anything not in BFME2 last patch). So it's reading the BFME2 english big/ patch right? I tried taking that out but it crashes without it. I tried editing both, in both ways, but it crashed again..Game.dat C++!

I just want to add a few extra lines but I'm missing some basic reason why it won't save!
I'm not sure but I think if I was just using BFME2 I may have got it to work already using the above.

If anyone has added new recruit texts for new heroes in ROTWK then that's what I need to know. I think :p

I think you need this tool to edit .csf's:

Generals CSF Editor 1.00 Beta
CSF EDITOR

works fine for me

You don't need to use the CSf editor for bfme2? It should work fine without it.

I open english.big extract everything to a folder, edit lotr.str to my liking in notepad, open final big add the directory and save it as english.big.
The game opens fine but all the rotwk stuff is "MISSING" I have no idea what to do.
Sorry for bumping this old thread it's just that I can't find an answer

Let me start with saying that you did the right thing with bumping this topic. It's not old yet by any account and it's better to continue with a related topic, than to start a new one.

yea i have same problem but with the bfme 2 not rotwk, havent tried rotwk yet but will soon

Either plain BFME 2 or RotWK doesn't matter with this. What does matter is having a patch.

If you have patched your game, you will find that next to <YOUR GAME FOLDER>\lang\English.big, there is/are (an)other big file(s), called "englishpatch10X.big", in which X depends on the patch number. If you see such a file, open that .big instead and use the lotr.str you find in it.

Why? That lotr.str contains the patch changes :spam:

Have you got the lotr.str file in the right directory? Mine only functions in the xxy/data folder

Like Skywaters says, you will need to extract lotr.str into the data folder <YOUR GAME FOLDER>\data\lotr.str
You could put the file back in the big archive, but that isn't practical and just placing it in the data folder has no further effect.
