Both of these were made with ease, heres how:
  • Open up PaintShopPro, make a new 500x100 image (or whatever size you want) (file > new).
  • Find a good background image. It needs to tile well. For this guide im using a HL1 background:

  • Next you need a foreground image. Make a new raster layer (layers > new raster) at 80% optacity. Make sure you're foreground image will fit ;)2 . Paste it in.

  • Next you need to make the sides of the foreground look good. Make another raster layer. Sclect a small section to the side of the foreground imgae:

Now you need to fill this area with something like this:

Fill the selected area with the gradient.
    Now it looks like this:

You can do that with any images and with many diffrent foregrounds all overlapping.
This real just a cheaters way to a good image ;)2

You can get a similar effect in Photoshop with inner and outer glows.

Layers> new layer
Set the transparency to say 80%.
Paste your image over the background.
If it doesn't look quite right, go to Layers> Properties an change the transparency vale until you get it looking right.
