I'll just jump in and say, that I highly recommend working with an established freeware middleware solution such as the Quake III Arena engine. It'll give you an enormous jump start if you want to use 3d graphics as it already has a fantastic software renderer and very good network code.
If you're going two-dimensional, I recommend the registered version of GameMaker. GML is a very simply language to work in, but the entire thing itself is a lot more powerful than people who haven't used it credit it to be.

thanks, I'll certainly keep those in mind when we get to that stage

that stage can't arrive at any point in time until we have a poll up for people to vote
and that's not going to turn up until it has a forum to be at home in
basically what I'm saying is, I think it's time now to either put the forum in place or drop the idea.
