'Tis true that one can navigate all three dimensions freely when in orbit, but so can missiles fired into orbit.

The true advantage for the alien in the 'alien invasion' scenario is that the humans cannot destroy the source of the aliens, only the invation force, which puts the humans in a permanent Vietnam War scenario where it is impossible to fight the aliens on their own ground.

The orbital attack ships are wonderfull against defined Anti Space (AS) installations, but since they are so far away from the Earth's surface they will have problems spotting hidden instalations, so a camoflaged AS battery would be pretty effective. But again, Vietnam War scenario, as you cannot gain control of anything but what your battery can target, which doesn't include anything but the planet you're on, so you cannot attack the aliens' planet and stop them from invading again.

Makes me think of Enders Game.

Regrettably, a planet's defenses are largely static and have finite spaces in which to operate. Orbitting or farther-moving enemy space armadas have the clear advantage of taking "pot-shots" at various parts of the planet able to disrupt the civilization's morale and other factors in ways you all haven't considered. If an alien space-farring race has travelled all this way in the vastness of space, then they have the supreme luxury of time and can simply wait while slowly picking off areas of the planet most vulnerable.

Oh and.. as mentioned.. a planet firing missiles from surface-to-orbit would be like a medeival catapult to future-era artillery. Like throwing rocks at space tech we haven't even imagined.

The Alien Armada needs to simply hit key areas of the planet too hard to protect like energy powerplants and you can have mass riots which can do the work for the attackers. Vietnam? How the heck does that factor in when yer faced with attackers from another world whose social and military constructs are beyond our primative ones?

The C&C3 story is different and more interesting, however since it involves seeding Earth a long time ago where humans could adapt overtime. Orbital Bombardment from a totally unknown alien armada is likely sure death for the defending planetoid.

Surely that's what the Vietcong were compared to the American army. The Vietcong used basic weaponry, whereas the USA had chemical weapons, atomic bombs, tanks, much more high-tech than any Vietcong equipment.

Bah, well, I mentioned Vietnam because the story I hear was that the U.S. did not want to invade N. Vietnam, so their whole strategy was based on holding and regaining S. Vietnam, which meant that the N. Vietnamese never suffered from broken factories and/or supply lines except in S. Vietnam.

And as for your Catapult/Modern Artillery comparison, I must say that as we did not define the type, you can really say very much. I may for example have a giant laser, which will have the same range and accuarcy as a laser mounted on a spaceship.

However, if both use missiles, your missiles can have a better weight-power ratio as you work mostly from space.

But if we use lasers, I (may) have just the same ability to destroy the spaceship as you have to destroy me, except that I can hide, something you can't do while in orbit. We both have the cappability to remove ourselves from the other's aim, you by moving out of orbit and me by hiding.

This means that your only advantage is your homeworlds invuerability, which I don't have.

Yer assuming the planet and the invading armada know each other like in a StarWars scenario (Rebels vs Empire). However, this is less the case. For the most basic approach, look at what the Spanish Conquistors did to the C. American civilizations - they decimated em militarily (swords, horses, and simply more modern tactics) and biology (European viruses). And yet.. the Spanish invaders were thousands of miles away from any help thus brought all their hundreds of years of experience over to an unknown land. Thank gawd the Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas were not aliens and would totally eradicate the caveman-like spanish. But they were humans.

Comparing "invaders from space" and "planetoid defenders" totally depends on if they know each other. If they don't, ALWAYS BET ON THE INVADERS FROM SPACE. They know 100,000x more than indigeous people trapped on a planet.

In the C&C3, both Nod and GDI are using the same tech as the Scrin (Tiberium Masters). This is precisely like the Robotech story.

Scrin still have major advantages in the area of Tiberium. They themselves are immune to it, and it provides benefits to their forces in a very direct fashion. The devourer tank uses it as an energy source to power up its weaponry. Humans meanwhile are poisoned by it, so their infantry can't fight on it. GDI only use as a resource to produce stuff with. Nod can make use it to boost their infantry's capability, blow it up, and reseed it, but that's about it.

As for disease, while it's true that the invaders would likely not have immunity to it, you're assuming that the viruses can infect them. You don't know if the disease causing agent even recognizes alien tissues as something to attack.

Advantages to coming from the orbital plane? First, it allows one's forces to remain hidden until you're ready to deploy. Second, but less importantly for the Scrin, there are surely resources out in the solar system that can be utilised to build up more of a force. While attacks are likely to come from all directions, it's more practical to come in on that plane.
