The British Empire was built on drugs
Exactly! It was built on genocide, mass murder, nationalist, corporatism, racism, absolute faith and slavery as well but we just won't mention those.

Seriously, I don't understand why people give a shit what other people put in their bodies? Especially governments. Just think of the TAX revenue you could hit from licensed opiate retailers? Or shops selling coke?
The Dutch drugs 'harm minimisation' policies work pretty well from what I see. Plus they see the lowest incidence of teenage pregnancy despite their age of consent being twelve and with all the sex shops in Amsterdam etc. Before I see four thousand Dutchies fly at me brandishing their banners saying 'NOT EVERYWHERE I NETHERLANDS IS LIKE AMSTERDAM!', I'll point out that I am well aware of this. However my point is that the opportunity is very much there. Weed is readily available in cafes and space cakes and shit. So, why is the Netherlands not a nation of potheads?
And what's with all this bullshit, 'ergh cannabis gives you schizophrenia'? Yeah, it also alleviates the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Wanna know what else? cigarettes give you cancer. But it also has some benefit for patients with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Alcohol, in moderation, protects against heart disease, but in high doses increases the risk.
My point here?
All things are OK until you have too much of them, or you let them control you. And if you let 'em control you? Well dude, sux2BU. Shouldn't mean it should be illegal tho.

Fair enough. I cheerfully retract my point.
My point is that even in spite of all the lax rules in Netherlands, your country isn't in ratshit. To quote Star Wars, the more governments tighten the grip, the more people slip through the fingers. Better to loosen off a little and at least if people MUST do these drugs, they can do so safely, as opposed to sharing needles or getting it off unsavoury characters who could be putting anything in it. Also, it puts those unsavouries out of business...you'd end up with less crime (not least because lots of things that WERE crimes aren't crimes anymore, LOL...altho to be fair that's basically how our govt is cutting crime - by redefining what is and isn't a serious crime)

At the other end of the scale, idiot. Remember how getting your car broken into used to warrant a police callout?
Not anymore.
I don't know where you live, but the cops show up for everything here in Missouri. A neighbor even called the cops on me for not picking up my dog's poop once and they sent a guy to come show the error of my ways.

"We can choose to give the business of selling drugs to either the thugs and ganglords, private enterprise, or the government. We made the absolute worst possible choice."
Its true though, if the government or private enterprise sold drugs, you'd have just as many addicts, but you wouldn't have the gang shootings and people robbing to feed their habits. The government could also tax the hell out of it and put it straight into health care.

I think you have been reading the tabloids too much, Ash. They call the police out at the drop of a hat for anything, and there have been loads of new crimes made. Even if what you suggested were true, it wouldn't affect crime figures.
Sure it would. If something was no longer a crime, and there was a high occurrence of that thing, then crime figures would drastically reduce.
If they've reclassified 'serious' crimes (as in, what is and is not), then they can turn around and say LOOK! SERIOUS CRIME IS DOWN! It isn't as far-fetched as you might think. Not that I disagree with the judgement, but see how they declassified cannabis from Class-A to Class-C? Notice how the number of Class-A offences dropped...
It's a question of simple mathematics. People can tweak statistics to prove anything. 40% of all people know that.

Of course, significantly less of that healthcare would go to the druggies because it's self inflicted. We can't have every Samuel Smackrat coming in and getting organ donations when there are legitimate illnesses that can be treated. Druggies can get to the back of the queue.

WELL OBVIOUSLY but I was giving your example of not coming out to a car. That wouldn't affect crime figures at all. And I can't think of any other crimes that have had their classification changed other than Cannabis. Plus, has Class A even gone down? Crystal Meth only recently got upgraded to that category, so it's going the other way too.
