I would like to add that having pikes in front of swords seems useless in a physical sence, the whole point of pikes is that they're designed to attack enemies from a distance usually with a line of men in front for protection, having pikes in front would render the swordsmen behind ineffective until the enemie is in close range which would then render the pikes ineffective. Switchable combos should only happen in certain combos where there is a prtical use for having them the other way around.

This is my my view, pikes infront of swords in to deter cavalry charges on the swordsmen, if the cavalry does charge the pikes will kill most of them, then the ones that did get through the swords would finish them off. So it works brilliantly. (unless they charge from behind in which case they all all dead)

what if the cavalry are repelled, but there is an assault of enemy pikes? pikes vs pikes does not exactly favor you, so switching to having the swordsmen in front would be a great option then, as long as you remember to switch it back :p

The most effective strategy in this case is to have pikemen at the flanks, with basic swordsmen making up the backbone of your army in the centre. Behind the swordsmen would be ranks of archers. If you notice that the enemy is sending cavalry, you put the pikemen in front to halt them. If the enemy is sending footmen, you send the pikemen to form up standing next to the swordsmen so that they can stab out while protected by the swordsmen. The archers can then spread out behind and fire at the enemy. Works excellently. In an online game people don't expect you to use formations and tend to attack indiscriminately, while your formation will work flawlessly.

Well, my goal is to have the pike/sword hordes have a toggle, so you can switch who is in front and who is in back. So when the cavalry comes you switch to pikes up front. Then you switch back in other instances.

^ Very good idea. Maybe you could also have a toggle to make the melée soldiers move forwards and attack nearby enemies before returning to their charges.
