I even thought of a tech-tree thingy.....
Factions could be something like they are for bfme2, though with gondor/rohan seperate.... you would also get to pick your team and which one you facing... And each factions would have it's own advantage, like Mordor can have more units, but their units are weaker, Elves stronger but fewer, etc.
Anyways...
Each side would have a basic swordsmen, archer, and spearmen.
And then an elite of each one. Or maybe just a couple of them....
And then each would have a elite elite unit...... And seige weapons, horses, mumikil, etc. would be vehicales.....
For fun, let's do the factions!
Gondor (I guess they would have to be the most versitile faction. No real streagths or weakness. Good all around)
Swordsmen-Gondor soldier
Archer-Gondor archer
spearmen-Gondor Spearmen
EliteSwordsmen(or maybe pikemen)-Citadel guards
EliteArchers-Rangers(Would have to have a toggle with sword I guess...)
EliteElite-Fountain Guards(Spear/sword toggle)
Mordor (Mordor. Self explanatory)
Sw-Orc
Ar-Orc archer
Sp-Orc spearmen
EliteSw-uruk
EliteAr-Haradrim
EliteSp-Easterlings
EliteElite-Troll
Rohan(They get more horses at each command post then anyone else, decent units)
Sw-Peasent
Ar-Yeomen.....
Sp-I have no clue....
Elitesw-Rohirrim
EliteAr-Too bad, they don't get one
EliteSp-Rohirrim
EliteElite-Royal Guard
Isengard(Evil version of Gondor. Maybe a bit weaker, but a bit more units)
Sw-Uruk-Hai
Ar-Crossbow
Sp-Uruk-Hai
EliteSw-ummmm......
EliteAr-Uruk Scouts(bow/sword toggle)
EliteSp-......
EliteElite-Berserker
Elves(Fewest units, strongest[for the most part])
Sw-Lorien swordsmen
Ar-Lorien Archer
Sp-Mirkwood something
EliteSw-Rivendell Swordsmen
EliteAr-Either Mirkwood or Galadhrim with bow/sword toggle.....or maybe both?
EliteSp-Mithlond sentry
EliteElite-Noldor Warriors (maybe sword/bow toggle?)
Dwarves
Meh, I don't want to the do the rest........
What do you think?

yeh, it is. IIRC they meet some engine limit or such and thus of that they put it of
I think the problem became that Middle-earth's world was too big for Oblivion's world. At least that's what I believe to have happened.

A finished BFME that lived up to the hype of the E3 preview and Inside the Battle vids would've been great too.

You guys have done and are doing great things with BFME's engine, but there's only so much you can do with it. Also, multiplayer skirmishes have very limited appeal to me, so until someone does a good campaign and/or WotR mod I'm SOL (one of the reasons I'm following the RJ-RotWK mod with such interest).
I the meantime, Dawn of Fantasy looks very promising:

Those wanting this much desired (for some weird reason since both Battlefronts were kinda awful.. unless you're a console owner I guess) check out The Last Alliance in the forums I posted earlier, a LOTR battlefield modification.
I also suggest anyone wanting an "ordinary footsoldier" experience check out the brilliant Last Days mod for Mount and Blade.
This is my Gondor Infantry Commander character in battle against a legion of Mordor (I had 180ish troops against 360ish... took a loooong time)
