Well a way froged blades could be changed is like this:

Men - preupgraded weapons are dull grey, when upgraded they turn into a lighter shade of grey

Elves - preupgraded weapons are light grey, when upgraded they turn silvery white

Dwarves - preupgraded weapons are dark metallic gray, when upgraded they turn silvery grey

Mordor - preupgraded weapons are dark grey with traces of dirt and rust, when upgraded they become a lighter shade of metallic grey

Isengard - preupgraded weapons are black, when upgraded they turn greasy dark grey

Moria - preupgraded weapons are black with traces of dirt and rust, when upgraded they turn greasy black, with all imprefactions removed

Just a suggsetion.
I will remember Rhovanion Alliance, RIP .

I didnt realise their were that many shades of grey in the world...

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

I think that Dzhons suggestions are great but wouldnt they take
a massive amout of work. Expecially the different sword upgrades like two handed
and longswords. Well i like the idea but wouldnt it take a looooong time to do?

I'm not thinking all units of all factions. The longsword & two-handed sword idea was aimed primarily at the Gondor Soldier. Might not take too much modelling...the BFME2 Uruks (w/ Shields) use basically the same model as the BFME1 one as far as I know and it looks fine. Pikes shouldn't require much work - wooden handle spears go to solid metal ones (or solid wood pikes get a metal spear tip).

In some cases, armor upgrades for units like Fountain Guards make little sense to me because they would automatically have the best equipment available. The only time we saw large numbers of soldiers get a significant improvement in equipment in the films was the arming on Rohan's peasants at Helm's Deep and possibly the arming of some Wildmen with Isengard blades.

I've always hated the upgrade system in BFME2, and miss the more distinct faction differences of BFME1. The thing I really hated about that game was when they made Elven Warriors work like pikemen. "Well, Rohan needed a pike unit..." No, they didn't! They have the best cavalry in the game...Rohan's counter to cavalry should be Rohirrim.

Oi! I like that much more! Upgrades for faction specific things! Ex. Isengard crossbows SHOULD NOT have fire arrows...It would hurt if they did :p

indeed. they shouldnt have fire
and yes. the forged blades makes the swords looks like lightsabers..
those effects in game are terrible.. like the black glow on Nazgûl's or the cyan glow in high lvl heroes..

I'm not making any promises... but considering that we have got LordIstari on the SEE Team now (since Lauri left) we MIGHT try the "change weapon model way" *crossing fingers*

If not, we'll go with the symbol, of some sort =)

(This is all for Beta V though... most likely) :)

I'd definately not remove them, because you already have much fewer ways of customizing and upgrading your troops than in other games (like the tons of permanent technologies in AoE), and it would also make the player have even more money than he already has... new weapons would be the best solution, or a more subtle glow, but I wouldn't even mind blades with no FX at all, as long as they stay. (Actually, I don't mind the blue glow, either... one of the very unrealistic things in this game that I never really cared about)

Build me an army worthy of Mordor!

Maybe make the glow more subtle, still have a blue/red tint to the blades and be polished (shiny). That way realism is adjusted still for gameplay, but it isn't as... horrific.

We could work with different models, or skins. But I'd definitely remove the glow.

Different kind of FX glow is needed to indicate what's going on, but the ones I hate the most are FB... hence this thread. But if there was another way than FX, I'd rather remove them all yes =p

Maybe they don't need to be so obvious...this is what my thought's on this is:

Heroes f.ex who deal fear, you see that already in the palantir, is there any better way to show that people are scared then that they all treble or even run away sometimes...

poison effects show as all the enemies die faster.
This is kind of all I need to say, but it seems way better to me...people do not need to know these things if they don't have the brains to figure it out themselves when they've seen it in game for many years now!
"Is there any of this rout with authority to treat with me?"

I think the trembling in fear thing adds to the visual realism, in terms of what most would do if for example, Sauron was about to smash their faces in :)

As for the poison, not sure what you're refering to.

On the subject of weapons (slightly off-topic), I just have an idea which is to be honest, quite pooey which may sound stupid, but I was wondering what y'all thoughts were on a system where after say, a number of conflicts or battles or maybe time on a map, a unit's weapons will become weaker until eventually innaffective, unless they are upgraded.

It would add another angle to the gameplay, but I'm guessing the scripting would be anal simply from what I've read. It would certainly give you something to spend the money that seems to be infinite after 20 minutes of gameplay.

Honestly whats wrong with just removing the glow and adding nothing else? That way your opponets wont know if they are upgraded(adds surprise) and if you want to know if your own units are upgraded then highlight over them all and on the palintir if you cant purchuse FB then they are all upgraded(assuming you have enough money to upgrade, which isint much, and you researched the upgrade).

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
