Ok so perhaps im a little sad but flicking voer to channel 4 here in the UK caught part of Richard and Judy, Normaly I wouldn't give one miniutes worth of my life to watching it but when they i heard the word's time travel I had to have a listen...

I'm sure plenty of topics similar to this have been posted on RA forums and indeed proberly here too (of course im not here enough to know this :) ). Of course Albert Einstein is of course a person who many will respect for ages his work has indeed inspired many. His theory of time being related to space of course is one i think most peeps may agree with although i could be VERY wrong in saying that.

Now a man from America (forgive me for forgetting his name im sure you will know those in the states) claims he is already in the process of doing this...

Of course the theory is that the machine will only be able to send you back to the point it's been activated...
(so no pet dinosaurs :( )

And although I could get really bogged into this topic I'm going to wait for a bit to see people's thoughts on this,

I however will say this:

*IS TIME TRAVEL JUST ANOTHER ONE OF MANS EGO BASED QUESTS TO GAIN MORE CONTROL?)*
If you met a girl you really liked and messed it bad would you go back tomorow to get her? Would you like many get the lottery numbers and go back? (this however would not be too possible now because construction of the device has been made possible which means (worst case) we could do away with the lottery! Alas no becuase as also pointed out their would be two parrel universes, one in which the girl said no and one where she might have said yes!

Of course only success in the present is more important than the failure in the past even if it's the future...
;)
No words can express my joy.......

IM GONNA BE A FREAKING DJ OK?!

it is absoloutlely impossible in this day and age.

it will never happen on this planet, because the human race will be long dead before the technology is advancded enough to even think this is possible.

i personally think it is impossible, i think God is more believable than time travel.

I think the best we can do (and will be able to do) is to see images and maybe sounds from the past, but interacting with the past or the future doesn`t sound possible in real life..

you're kind of sounding like someone from the middle ages. in those days people thought they had discovered everything there was to discover :p
who are we to say that time travel isn't possible in a few centuries, after all there wasn't electricity not too long ago, and look what kind of advanced electronics we have now

Yeah... I kinda agree with olli. Humans need to die soon or face some kind of extinction. Though It may be possible to send something very small back a few seconds, I wouldnt think any longer.

its has nothing to do with technology.
this is physics. you can bend the laws of physics with out being God. and we all know that he doesnt exsist.... so i think its impossible.

now..teleportation. that has been done, but only with a tiny particle, i think it was a Quark or a lepton, something really small and it was teleported about 20 centimeters or a small distance. but that is a big advancement in science.

although it would be impossible to teleport humans, because there are billions and trillions of so many large complexed atoms and elements it would be impossible to arrange them all perfectly back together again, to form a living human being after them being broken down and sent to the destination.
you would either die from being broken down, or from being put back together in a horrible mess, with your arm sticking out your head or something, and of course being messed up internally, with your half your heart up your arse, and you lung where your brain is supposed to be

naturally, but we know so little about what time exactly is, let alone what laws apply to it, so we can't say anything about the possibility of time travel yet

I don't think we'd even know where to start in bending time to use it to fit our purposes. It's not a matter of energy, not a matter of a paradox, it's more a matter of figuring out HOW. We know time slows to, what to us, appears to be a stop as gravity increases, but time does not reverse, time does not shift, and we have no real evidence of any theory behind time travel. You can't really speculate on undeveloped technology before there's even a theory.
In the event that we do produce a theoretical basis for it: Will we be able to do it? I think not, as I believe that the theory and the practice of time travel will be worlds apart. Theory is nice. I work in theories on a daily basis, I work in the abstract which is sometimes applied to real life, and genuinely, while we labor over test results, observations, and field studies trying to produce theories and models which fit what we know, we know we'll never be 100% correct, and that usually most theories which can be understood do not apply to the real world, and that none of our theories are absolutely true. Time travel is delicate. If you have no clue of how it will be done, who is to say it won't require millions of gigawatts of energy to be accomplished? Who is to say you won't need an entire black hole for a one way trip? I know one thing of the subject, and that's that in order to bend space and time, you need a lot of force acting on it, and that might not be possible on earth or within the solar system without causing the destruction of our planet.

If they've got some empirical evidence for that (and I'm unsure how - the prisms were 3feet apart. Can you MEASURE that kind of discrepancy in such a small particle in a distance so small?), then it'd be interesting to know how they did it in some sort of plain-English non-jargonistic speak.

That's assuming they have actually done what they claim, though.

But, what if you are creating totally new dimension without interference from the starting timeline? :p
Then you will be able to kill your own forepart without fear of your existence.

:p I've heard only about success of Czech physicists, which made force on light to slow down (in Br liquid).

And don't say Time Travel is impossible for human, because who thought in 19th century, that someone will be able to get to the Moon?

the thing is though electricity and space travel were not that complicated. electricity was discovered in quite primative times (compared to what we are living like now).

Time travel is a whole step up on the technology level.
where to begin to start looking to do this? how can we do this? will a machine do it?what will be the consiqences? etc...

i dont think humans will ever even encounter time travel and if they do, i dont think it would be used because most people would be scared as to what could happen.
would they die? what would happen to the universe? would they get trapped etc?

so if time travel was ever "invented" there would be a lot of moral/ethical questions to ask and also scientific ones...and also you would need to find someone brave enough to go back in the past or through the large, dark, swirling worm hole, as it is often commonly shown as in science fiction films/TV series.

i personally dont think time travel will ever be possible. i dont think that life is like a video cassete...where it is all being recorded on a strip, and can be wound back to any part. there is no eveidence in the universe that what ever action we do is recorded and captured and saved. no particles/atoms rays of light etc we have come across have demonstrated this

srry bout the 4 days, but i was a little busy with my new girlfriend, which means computers come second for once :p

anyways, i have read in a Popular Science that theory does point to the possiblity of time travel, problem is that the way proposed was completely preposterous - use a spacecraft to "grab" a black hole and drag it across the universe at the speed of light to create a wormhole which you had to jump through before it closed up again.

now, the actual idea is, as stated before, completely insane, but i think the principle is the most important part - that using gravity, which would appear to interact with time in some form, to manipulate the "fabric of space-time" in a way that allows us to explore it's reactions.

i do believe that this may actually be possible, simply because there's alot of stuff that humans have said is impossible but really isnt. i think that given enough time and theory, there may a be a feasible way to manipulate time, whether it be to go back in time or even just slow it down or speed it up. we also must keep in mind that physics is a very new science, having only really developed in the past 100 years or so, so the chances of large portions of our current knowledge of physics and the universe could be wrong - just remember that we once thought that the speed of light was constant, which in has recently been put to the test.

Time is 4th dimension, so time travel is travel in 4th dimension.

Time travel is only possible with the existence of parrellel universes. If parrellel universes exist then there is the possibility of travelling to these universes, however this really isn't "time travel" this is just accessing other universes that may be similar to ours in their own period of time.

Time is considered the 4th dimension so yes to travel we would be travelling through space and time. The string theory is the most credible theory for this.

CERN is working on particle accellerators and other theories but whether they will make a breakthrough in our life time is difficult to say. There is no credible evidence yet to support the string theory.

Travelling forward it time faster than normal is possible, by speeding up, but to make a noticeable difference you would need to be going very fast. But to travel back in time you would need to be going faster than the speed of light, which is impossible, Tachyons can travel faster than light. So if you were to fire a tachyon at a target, it would hit the target before it was fired and you would not see it hit the target until after it did. If time travel is possible without going to parallel universes there is one massive problem with travelling back in time more than a few days, Temporal Paradoxes, the further back you travel the bigger the problem gets. What could be considered 'time travel' could be moving to a parallel universe that is maybe some time behind our universe, and not actual time travel. This would mean than any changes you were to make to that universe would have no affect on ours.
