Some changes were made to the server this past evening. It may have caused some issues with sites or scripts on the server. Note that for the most part these are aesthetic issues, and should not affect the functionality. If you note any errors, feel free to post them in this topic.

Update details:
Apache upgraded from 1.3.x to 2.2.x
PHP 4 using suPHP and FCGI

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

Sorry the bit of downtime experienced this morning was from me trying to get APC (php opcacher) installed for PHP 4.

 I've never seen such high loads on Linux before. I think I choked the server. (load was in 120s when normally it is around 1 to 3, even durning peak hours is about 3 to 5 and a max of 10).

If you are already in an updating mood, couldn't you update to PHP5 aswell? As you probably know, PHP4 will be discontinued by the end of the year and on php.net it explicitly says:

Please use the rest of this year to make your application suitable to run on PHP 5.

We're now running both PHP 4 and 5 at the same time. To test an application under PHP 5 just change the extension to .php5. We're running PHP 4 as default until everything is worked out.

I think PHP 5 might be broken at the moment, but if someone wants to try it, they certainly may. It might just be PHP 5 with fastcgi that's broken.

Just tested it, it is broken somehow. So I hope "everything is worked out" soon

PHP 5 works again. It was xcache. You can play with PHP 5, but if it doesn't work correctly I'm probably trying to add Xcache or APC or do something else to it.

if i have a script index.php, and all other files only function by inclusion in index.php, i assume i only have to rename index.php to index.php5? (makes for easier testing)

That should be fine. Once index.php5 is using PHP 5, I don't expect it to fire up PHP 4 to process files.
