figured i make a thread about it, since its been going on pretty heavily the last few days. at the moment it seems we are in the most tense part of the battle of wills. the military has been shooting people by the dozens today, and officially numbers of killed are around 9... which was what, like half of the people who died during the tzunami over there? bet its around 200 people dead by now.

but it seems to be a even battle yet, on one of my local newspaper-sites, they are claiming that general Than Shwe (73) have resigned/fled, which if it is true could be the first domino to collapse the junta.

also, i have to say that this must be one of the first situations where the internet has had a vital part of the liberation of the people. without it people wouldnt have been able to get information out and getting information in, and they would have been blind and ignorant to the actions of the demonstrators around their country.

Burma junta shut down their internet, so that means their situation is serious now. They are only green brains :D

I don't get why China doesn't get ivolved....its only in their best interest.

Alot of Chinese ecenomic interests lie in Burma's stability, and wouldn't this be a perfect excuse to exert further influence over the east-asian region, something which China obviously wants to do?

It would also improve China's image, proving they can be a world leader in peace keeping.

Though perhaps they realize they would be deemed hypocritical by telling the Junta to stop surpressing monks when they themselves are doing so in Tibet....

Good point...now that you mention it the idea of China going over to stop the massacre of monks (and massacre of others) would be a whole new level of irony.

China is in a "damned if they do damned if they don't" situation on Burma. if they tell the junta to stfu and start talking and move towards democracy, what the hell are they supposed to do about their own government which basically is also dictatorial?

if they don't then the olympics will be very empty, and they will look equally bad and people will demand more democracy in China.

in my opinion, the best way to help burma is to spread non-government controlled internet connections around the country so that they can communicate freely and organize themselves as best they can. naturally dialogue could help out if the military wants to compromise, but it doesnt seem likely.
some news tonight showed that a major defected with his son to Thailand because he didnt want to shoot munks. this is in my opinion a very nice news-story that will help the people outside burma fight against the junta.

My opinion on what is going to happen? Absolutely nothing. The world will sit back and be all talk. 6 months from now it'll simply be a small historical moment, nothing more.

also a possibility, though i hope that this is the first step in something bigger. at least until the olympics are over, burma will appear in media, and so will china.

as long as information technology spreads to people that have been easily suppressed with ignorance, things will most likely turn out for the better.

Im not sure if this would be considred a dead thread. but ill share my opinion.

I think the junta situation is pretty bad. i would'ev thought one of the countries would have steped in to crush the coup and prevent another rebellion like that.

we aren't living in a perfect world. the UN might protect us from world wars, but it does not protect us for tyranny and suppression. if anything, there should be a new group on top of the UN that works for stopping these sort of cases, but it would probably do more harm than good.

It might. but it would ensure that the world's militaries would be in line and to be loyal enough to protect the country and their people. not destroy it. for those soldiers who took part in the coup are just disloyal disgraces. it would seem their only loyality is to the ones behind the coup.

There such an institution, fully armed and well financed. It's called the US government. And it might actually be doing more harm than good. We'll know 300 years from now...

the problem is that the US is not neutral and objective. whatever it does is done with intent towards alot of different things than just getting rid of tyranny.

an organization of this type needs to be as disconnected from the rest of society as possible, or else it's just corrupt.

Well, there's two reasons that I can ascertain on why this wasn't prevented. 1. The US is tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan; and 2. China doesn't want to seem hypocritical. And, as to why it happened, military coups just happen. Either it's a greedy general who wants all the power in his little country, or it's to end said corruption after it takes place. In my slight knowledge, that's how it works, anyway. Someone want to expand on this?

OLD SIG
When history witnesses a great change Razgriz reveals itself,
first as a dark demon. As a demon it uses it power to rain death upon the land,
and then it dies. However after a period of slumber Razgriz returns
As the demon sleeps, man turns on man.
Its own blood, and madness soon cover the earth.
From the depths of despair awaken the Razgriz.
Its raven wings ablaze in majestic light.
Amidst the eternal waves of time
From a ripple of change shall the storm rise
Out of the abyss peer the eyes of a demon
Behold the Razgriz, its wings of black sheath
The demon soars through the dark skies
Fear and Death trail its shadow beneath
Until Men united wield a hallowed sabre
In Final Reckoning, the beast is slain.

the states wouldn't have prevented it even if they had the manpower to do it. it would have pissed china off enough to use military force against other nations nearby.

in my opinion this is a proxy war with china. if china stops working with Burma because they are bad, it would look bad on them... if they don't do anything at all the world opinion goes against them. could cause business loss.

Seems like a tough situation, china backs out, then they suddenly look like hypocrites and US might or might not move in and restore order in the nation if the senate wanted to. possibly with the aid of japan since their the closest ally in that side of the world.
