Sounds good to me. I like 'The Best Guest's suggestion as well - Bard could understand the thrush as a trait of his heritage, so it makes sense that his descendant could utilize a few small birds as scouts. Plus it's a great addition to the Dwarven forces, which aren't ideal for scouting about.
