How do they work? Sometimes I get the feeling one person could ping from a location in the Gamma Quadrant all the way to the Alpha Quadrant just like that.. which is sorta impossible without traveling.

I think they're like quarters of the galaxy, so pretty damn big. But how long it takes depends how you're travelling, cos if you're limited to lightspeed it'll take a hell of a long time to get anywhere outisde your own system. Hyperspace on the other hand :good:
Of course I don't look busy; I did it right the first time.
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?
There are 10 kinds of people in this world: Those who understand binary and those who don't.
FZM and Vort don't do tag wrestling...but if they did, they'd probably be the worst tag-wrestlers in the world.

Here's the breakdown on the FTL drives(ranges are given in reasonable, playable incriments):

Warp, the most basic and fundamental drive.
Range: Lightyears.
Levels: 1-9, base 10.

Hyperdrive, more expensive, energy hog
Range: Hundreds of Lightyears
Levels: 1

Slipsace, extremely unstable, rollercoster-like vortex
Range: Hundreds to Thousands of Lightyears
