The story would be about a small little creature , a bobbit , let's call him Erodo. He sets out on a great adventure to destory the one thing , and kill the evil lord Snauron. Only then will he restore peace in Lower Earth.

If people could effectively sue over such a generic storyline, bookstores would be quite empty. The books still on the shelves would certainly be original tho :p

Can't be sure, but I believe that copyright wise it's completely legal to write and publish exactly (and I mean letter for letter) the same book as another has done before you, as long as you can prove you've never seen the other writers book before you published yours. Or it could be the earlier writers job to prove you have read his book prior to publishing your own. I don't recall which of the two.

Regardless of all that, the enheritance series is definetly enjoyable enough to read, even if the storyline is quite predictable.

Yes, Solinx is right. Whether they are original or not, I enjoy reading the books and that's what counts to me. :p
Perhaps I just have more imagination than most and am better at moving myself into the story ;)

Actually I was listening to some commentaries and documentaries on the original trilogy, and Lucas said that he's basically taken the generic character stories that have been told again and again and put them in a fresh world. C-3PO and R2-D2 were inspired by Hidden Fortress's main characters (insignificant characters in something far more complex than they can imagine, usually comic relief) and you will find characters like them in a lot of places (I daresay Merry and Pippin could be considered in similar roles). Luke is the generic hero, and Obi-Wan his generic mentor. (Frodo and Gandalf) Han Solo's character was a foil for Luke and his character type has also had some rising popularity... etc etc

However, if you write something that is overtly familiar to another story the reader may know, it may detract from the experience. But I don't think there is a problem provided you can approach it in a way that is still enjoyable and is at least somewhat unique.

Right, but the whole way everyone is related is just a bit too much for me.

*sigh* tolkien described gollum as a skinny boned creature that was once a hobbit. Youd is a frog. PJ is the one that interperated smeagol onto the screen, and star wars came before lotr. I don't really think theres much similarity anyway, tbh.

If George Lucas felt that it was so similar he would of pressed charges.

Maybe he hasnt read it himself? :p

Take it you are reffering to The hobbit/Lord of the rings TV series cartoons? Wich pictured Gollum as more of a toad like being(Green, Etc)?

Ah. So you're saying George Lucas copied a cartoon of a starving frog for the most powerful jedi in his series?

Star Wars rocks, Lord of the Rings rocks, Inheritance... dunno what the hell it is, but if it's Eragon, then it rocks okay enough...
That's my opinions...

Actually I quite like the overall plot of Star Wars (over the six movies, I don't like the Extended Universe)... Sure the whole force idea seems absurd, but it plays the important role of a protective cult/religion in the movie that also gives you an excuse to have swordfighting ninja wizards without it looking too messed up. If you are going to make fun of it, of course its going to look stupid. I wonder just how many of the Star Wars movies you've seen...

And as for Inheritance, I wasn't altogether interested in it in the first place. However I'm sure that there are some who don't care if the plot bears some similarity (and there are quite a few who do), and while a few parts of the overall plot may be the same, I'm sure that its plenty different in the way it works out even if only because its a dragon story as opposed to a space story.

Topic cleaned up.

There were also a few posts between Yodawarrior's and those of Lauri and JEV3 which have been removed.

So I just finished Eldest, it was as good if not better than Eragon, although maybe a bit slow at points.

Yodawarrior, you say it's so like star wars that George could sue, but I don't see it. The only similarities I see are
Spoiler

In any case, can't wait till Brisingr comes out.

i personally liked the second half of eragon better than eldest's first part. Eldest would of been great without the roran chapters that lasted 60 pages or so.

I don't see why he should hide Galbatorix. Im sure he will be hidden until the 4th book.

if you want you can pre-order if from http://www.amazon.co...h...3288&sr=8-4

lol amazon called it eragon 3 haha.

Well, just look at the whole way everybody is related and how it's revealed. But anywhere, I'm not saying it's a bad book, just that's it's a bit too similar for my taste. You think differently, and I respect that.

Elvenfury, imo Roran's bits were the best parts. It got away from the more unoriginal parts and were quite entertaining.

I agree, they were quite original (other than the townspeople following him like sheep to a sheperd).
