Is there anyone on this network who uses Magic Quotes? If not, I want them killed. Kill kill kill :)
Fed up of getting a script working, keep it up awhile, then update something a find to my horror the page is suddenly covered with slashes.

Magic Quotes :)

I'd also prefer to have it turned off actually, but it's not that much of a hassle to strip out the slashes before processing the data.

I'm not sure if MasterNews uses them.

It should be coded to be fine either way. I think they actually originally caused some problems with templates and such.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

include('http://www.myexterna....com/myfile.php'); is also deprecated on PHP6 and all sites use it to include Masternews and other things.

Really, screw PHP6.

So what shall we do? I honestly don't care. However, I'm about to make another topic about removing php 4 and will need to recompiling everything just to get rid of it (wow cpanel is stupid...). So come to some conclusion.

Just wipe PHP4 from the server and recompile PHP5 with magic_quotes_gpc off by default.

Including internal files is no problem, but if you try to include external files, it will cause errors, because the operation is considered unsafe. The alternative might be what Revora Accounts API uses, which is far more complicated than includes.

Strange though that phpinfo() still displays them as on:
Directive Local Value	Master Value
...
magic_quotes_gpc	On On
...

The masternews include are nothing but html anyway, so just:

echo file_get_contents('url');

Hopefully url_fopen is still supported, or whatever the option is that allows fopen (which is the "parent" for all of the other file operations) to open URLs.

I think they'll keep it like in PHP 5.2 where allow_url_fopen is On by default and allow_url_include is Off.
