It's almost impossible to play in the core planet systems because the planets are so close that the three fleet icons actually overlap other planets, any fixes for these?

Look at the sticky regarding fixes. It's in there.

Phoenix says he will fix it for 1.1. It can be tricky, but you'll get used to it.
