First off, searching the forums, I came across two similar problems; Guest Fritch and Guest Last Draconian.
I'm running Vista on a brand-new computer. Far above specs and everything.
The shortcuts pull up the error that they can't find the disc, but it is in there. (I just paid $20 for it 'cause I managed to lose my original disc one!)
Batch files and even Mod launcher start the vanilla FoC.
It worked just fine on my old XP system, which I was using less than a week ago.
I'm pretty experienced with computers, I've got the mod folder in the right place (I even followed the instructions on the Fritch thread, just to be sure.), I've tried reinstalling both PR and EaW/FoC (Multiple times.), but I can't figure out what is going on!
I've been at this for two days now!

I sure hope I didn't overlooked something completely obvious, or I'll feel completely stupid...

P.S. I've waited for about 4 days for the Revora emails. I've sent about 20 rquests for three different emails. Aren't I the lucky one?
That took two weeks to arrive...

<DevXen> Today I was at the store and saw a Darth Vader action figure that said "Choking Hazard." It was great.

I relatively recently got a new comp with Vista (at the end of February) and it works fine for me...

Odd...

Discovery!

Vista may try to put the files into some wierd subset called 'compatability files', that won't work. Just copy files back to the standard part of the folder.
Vista says it's the same folder, but it works now, not before.
I've only been using Vista for about four days now, so I don't know it all yet!

True, Vista is really a computer killer :( I'll buy new stuff with XP soon :thumbsdownsmiley:

As for this problem, it's best to install everything outside Program Files/Windows folders, as Vista is extremy delicate when it comes to them. You won't be able to mod files easily etc.:/

Vista's not really bad to me, except for this one problem, I've not had a single compatibility issue.
And I've not really had any issues with something being in the Program Files/Windows folders, either,

Lucky you, then. I couldn't delate some programs becouse they were in 'Program Files' folder, I had savegame issue (Vista didn't want to allow game to save in it's folder in 'Prg. Files) etc. Not mentioning many incompatibilities (like half of my old games don't want to work).. My friend bought laptop recently and he has some serious issues as well :(

For me, installing outside 'Programm Files' solved many problems, and I'm sure it won't hurt anybody - so I advise it

I suppose I'll have to eat my own words, as the system won't let me edit any files in tho mod folder... when I try to save, says that it cannot create the file despite the fact I opened the file from there...
And I have edited files there before.

The AI is giving me hell, or no hell at all i should say, because its not working. But I also had this problem when I reinstalled it on my XP a few weeks ago. I forgot how I fixed it, But anyway, I am also having that save game problem (I swear Vista is paranoid (I have to allow windows live onecare to do things, hell I couldn't even put PR in the FOC folder without adminastrator permission)) any ways on how to fix this? the saved games not saving, I mean.

The problem would be User Account Control. You should be able to turn it off from Control Panel's Security Center link. Even running in a lesser state thanks to some internet advice, UAC just locks down Vista to bad for even the users.

I am well aware this makes me sound like an idiot, but where is the off button for UAC? I can see where it says on, but I don't see where the turn off button is

Note: Disabling UAC will lead to a less secure system, so be warned.

On the control panel, type uac into the search box, should bring it up. It'll require a restart, though.

(Or just google it like I did.) ;)

Edit: Spelling fix. I grammar Nazi myself! :D

Ok... I have no idea if this is actually Vista's fault... but,
I open the game yesterday, and all my own changes were fine. (Including where dreadnoughts couldn't be built.)
I open today, and suddenly, I can build them again. I double check the files, they haven't been changed in 3 days. And they open with my code in them.
I cannot figure out what is going on.

Summary:
For who-knows-what-reason, the game is loading the ORIGINAL PR files from who-knows-where, and all the files I have have my changes in them...
Does anybody have any ideas?

I've just lost all ability to mod the mod, with no idea why, or even how.

I have Vista x64 Ultimate (the most famously temperamental and fickle version there is) and it runs the game fine, as well as all the mods I use. :p

Kitkun, what folder did you install the game in? If it's Program Files/Windows, IIRC Vista makes something like 'backup' of those folders and checks if something was changed; it seems to randomly use previous versions. If it is so, I strongly advise you to reinstall your game, and put it outside 'Program Files', for example C:\Games\EaW

Yeah... turns out my User Account Control was somehow turned back on... now my changes have been overwritten with the originals... I am ticked.

I think I'll do that Keraunos. Should've listened to you before...

Well, getting rid of UAC is desirable as well :xd: I can't wait to buy my new computer, without Vista :p It takes like 40 Gb of space now :/

Yeah, works fine again... for now.

But Vista only takes about 16GB.
