The masses of infected were thinning noticeably... well compared to how many there used to be.
"Just a little further boo, we can do this!" and Kelvin began firing at the incoming infected with even more vigor then before.

((I didn't have anything planned, FZM... I was sorta waiting for someone to post lol))

Ryn ditched the van as fast as he could. It had been months of bloody, gruesome warfare since he had seen Jim.

He reached the doors of the shop and stopped. As he rested doubled over with his hands on his knees, he looked towards the roof. Jim was waving to him.

((You were?! I'd have posted days ago :) Eh, no worries.))

The barricade was coming down fast, and soon the space was large enough for the first truck to accelerate through it, spitting fire backwards into the horde. A minute later, all the trucks were inside, and everyone was hurrying to repair the defences.
Carl had assigned himself to defend-the-builders duty and lay on top of part of the still complete barricade, snapping off rounds at the once again encroaching horde. Creature after creature went down, heads exploding in gruesome showers of gore. He was amazed that the horrendous rate of attrition they were suffering could do nothing to stop them. They would not cease until they were killed to a creature...
Of course I don't look busy; I did it right the first time.

Jamie's cowardly escape from the action meant that it was easily for him to sidle back into the group. Hoping no-one had noticed his departure from the action Jamie re-associated himself with the group, hoping to subtly wind his way in without causing comment.

((OOC: Godmod Man Away! Sorry...I was bored.))

As the barricade made it back up and the last people slid down from firing slots at the top, there was a palpable release of tension as everyone relaxed. For the new arrivals, the scene was rather awkward as they stood intrusive before their bloodied vehicles. Shortly, a nervous silence fell on those present as the engines were turned off. The only sound that could be heard was the tired moaning of the horde outside. The groups separated out, the floor space between them becoming subtly larger with every second.
Somebody coughed, and everybody jumped. Guns were raised and safety's clicked off. This new wary silence was a whole lot more awkward than the last one.
Slowly, deliberately, Darkman lowered his rifle, and cleared his throat. "O....K....let's all calm down shall we?"
But before anyone could reply, a commotion became evident at the back of the room*. A man shouldered his way through the throng and walked into the empty space between the groups.
"Ryn? Get your cowardly butt out here."
And it was only now that Ryn jumped down from inside a truck. He quickly took in the raised weapons all around, and his old friend standing in the centre of them all.
"Christ Jimmy, give the rest of us a chance to get in trouble why don't you?"

*which, Darkman observed, was a fairly small hanger or garage with conveniently few exits bar the main doors through which they had just arrived. A well thought out fortress.

Kelvin still felt very awkward... they were safe, but everyone's tension was running high.

Kelvin saw one of them from the other group walk forward.
"Ryn? Get your cowardly butt out here." Kelvin looked back over at Ryn as he hopped out.
"Christ Jimmy, give the rest of us a chance to get in trouble why don't you?"
Kelvin was already beginning to feel more relaxed, if Ryn wasn't here though, things might not have ended well...

Ryn could not believe his eyes. Somehow, Jim had managed to scrounge up the shop workers and make an advanced barricade system before the hordes could get to them. And against all odds, the aforementioned living dead had not managed to find them until now. Survival by chance, he decided.

"A fine barricade you managed to make for yourselves... Looks like this month's stock of construction supplies. Now, how about we get inside and lock 'er up again?" The exhausted Ryn said.

As the crowd moved closer to the door, Jim and Ryn stood alone for an awkward moment. The man-to-man hug that followed completed the strangeness.

"Okay, guys, enough with the faggotry for now, let's get back to putting rotting corpses back on the ground," said Titus, slightly weirded out by the intimate moment between the two, punctuated by the cocking of a shotgun. He went to the barricade, and started firing over it, taking down undead with the spray from each round of buckshot combined with a couple of grenade blasts thrown deep into the hordes.

"Get the truck in here, already! We don't have unlimited ammunition as far as I know, so let's get in and lock up tight."

From the depths of despair awaken the Razgriz.
Its raven wings ablaze in majestic light.
Amidst the eternal waves of time
From a ripple of change shall the storm rise
Out of the abyss peer the eyes of a demon
Behold the Razgriz, its wings of black sheath

Fear and Death trail its shadow beneath
Until Men united wield a hallowed sabre

Augustus Livingstone, BA Cantab. and specialist in those long dead and from very far away, smiled. Jimmy had been a competent leader, but Augustus was sure he wasn't the only one who had noticed the extreme luck it had taken for them to survive thus far. Still, it was nice to see him reunited with his friend, the newcomer. 'Ryn', he had called him. Strange name, thought Augustus. Still, these are strange times. Awkwardly holstering the small pistol he carried, Augustus approached the main body of the newcomers, huddled together as though slightly afraid of all the unknown people around them; unsurprising, given that the vast majority of unknown people they would have encountered so far would have been trying to eat their flesh.

"Shall we get you lot settled in, then?"

((OOC:@ Foxy, please OCD away. Incidentally, is it OK for me to adopt Darkman as a character?
@ Copa, apologies for god-modding you here, but it seems neccessary.))

For the next few days the group wandered rather aimlessly about the makeshift fortress, exploring, fortifying, re-arming. They were given this time to settle in before a meeting was called. Everyone gathered in a back room, each wondering why they were there. The gathering had been somewhat impromptu, and very unexplained.
Quiet gradually descended as Jimmy began to address the group.
"Allright guys, listen up. You're all wondering why you're here, and what exactly is going on. Well. I'm gonna tell you. First off, we need to talk food. Now, we've gathered a fair bit of that in here, but the fact is, it ain't gonna last forever. Things as they are right now, we've got enough for about ten days, two weeks at a push."
Jimmy raised his hands to silence the clamour that erupted at this statement. "This area is dry. We've gathered pretty much all there is to be had. So we gotta move. And soon."
Jimmy sat down, and let his words sink in. The effect was profound. Some people sank into silence in shock, others erupted in angry complaints. For a minute or two, no-one could make out anything anyone was saying.
There was a loud cough. Slowly, eyes turned to a diminutive figure stood in a corner of the room, who reddened at the attention. It was Aaron, a shy and quiet man who nobody really knew.
"What?" somebody asked.
"Erm...well, recently I've been working on the radio a little, you know, just tinkering around a bit and so on-"
"Get to the point, man!" Aaron went even redder, but continued.
"Well, yesterday, I started picking up a signal." Stunned quiet rippled across the room. "It's very faint, but...it's calling for survivors to gather. In a colony. They say they've got farms, and walls and...they say it's safe."
Of course I don't look busy; I did it right the first time.

Augustus knew the truth of Jimmy's statement; after all, hadn't they all been on reduced rations for some time now, and hadn't the food parties been going ever further afield? Looking at the faces of the old hands of the fortress, Augustus could see that he was not alone in his realisation. He raised his hand, and gradually the hubbub quietened around him. Jimmy pointed to him, acknowledging the hand.

"How far away is this place of safety? And... Well, really," he corrected himself, "what do we know about it?" Jimmy nodded, and Augustus offered his leader a quick grin. Things may well be looking up.

Jimmy shrugged - he had no answers. "Aaron?"
The small man stepped forward once again, and replied "Well, considering how faint it is, it could be anything up to 300 miles away if it's a powerful transceiver. I only just got the message, so I haven't looked up the location in the maps yet. Aside from that, we know very little, to be quite honest, other than what they tell us. The message, as I said, states that they have a growing community with farms, defences, government...it appears that they operate patrols to gather supplies and survivors, and to eliminate roving infected. By their account, things are going well. They are surviving. That is all one can say, really."
Having said his piece, Aaron retreated back to his alcove.

***

A few hours later, the town's approximate location had been noted in maps carried by the groups - it was about 180 miles northish, as the crow flies, and about 50 miles inland. If all went well, no more than a day's drive.

Augustus was in his element, and quite happy there. Sword slung over his back, sheathed yet ever-ready, he took charge of distributing supplies and armaments to all those who came forward. A large number of the newcomers held back at first, but the lure of food was too much for them to resist in the end.

"Half a loaf of bread each, one tin of assorted, umm.... tinned goods, pick your own, but no stealing......" The list went on, and Augustus lifted it out of his very heart and soul, an artist revealing his great masterwork, a natural organiser in a time of crisis. Jimmy came along quite late in the process.

"Gus, can you shift over to sorting out supplies in the trucks? I'll get someone else on sorting out the food."

"Sure thing, just let me-" Augustus spotted a shifty sleight of hand at his table. "You! Put that tin down! Don't think I'm blind!" Lecturer mode was a habit too hard to break. "Yes, of course, Jimmy. Leave it with me."

Kelvin sat in a corner, watching the movement going around. He was eating some of his own food, the junk food in his backpack, which he shared with Boo.
"So little guy? How you holding up? We're going to be fine, they have found a shelter... more permanent then this, we should be safest there. Maybe I can start helping people... I may only be good with computers, but I'm sure there's some way I can help, maybe I can help doctors working on finding a cure... that's what anyone who had the leisure to would be doing!"

Lenny ((lol, forgotten he existed, didn't we?)) walked over "Hey man... you need some real food, here." He broke off some of his and gave it to Kelvin. "Oh... and I do expect you to return the favor you know." They both chuckled...

Jim checked his watch; 7:30 PM. It was the middle of November and they were in the north - the sun was about to set.

"Be sure you gear up now. We leave tomorrow at daybreak. Also, be sure you bring plenty of ammunition... those things tend to group up outside the barricade at night. We've ha to blast them off the thing every morning for the last week. They've gotten closer and closer to breeching - I think that somehow they're learning. So I've set up a second line of defense, a big circumference inside the barricade of sharpened steel beams. There's only one openin in the thing, coinsiding with the garage exit for the vehicles.

"We'll need people standing guard all night. If they do breech, we've got to annihilate the ones that make it over so that they can't bring down the barricade from the inside. For those still clinging to the wall tomorrow morning, I've had some guys bring the flamethrowers up from the basement. They don't like fire too terribly much, we've decided.

"The entire stock has also been pulled out. Feel free to pick through it for guns and ammo. I know we got a shipment of C4 in before the outbreak; Ryn has already taken some. I will not be riding in the van with you... Ryn and I had souped up some crotch rockets pre-outbreak. When those things showed up, I put .50 cals with compensators on them. Backup is a 2-barreled shotty and some chaff canisters off the backend. After Ryn and myself ride on onne each, we'll have two left. Who wants one?"
