I'm quite sure Jesus of Nazareth really existed. But all the special stuff people later ascribed to him is of course just nonsense. Most likely he was just a commoner who offered new insights and philosophies, which was probably rather unusual for the time. Comparing him to today, I think he might have been a hippie of some sort, or a peaceful revolutionary like Gandhi.

The same can be said for the Buddha as well. I doubt that he really survived on 1 grain of rice a day, nor when he was known as Prince Suddhartha did not know of the concept of life & death, sickness and old age. All things are subject to hyperbole through history.

It's all a right laugh, though. Jesus clearly existed, that's not really in debate. The debate is whether God exists or has ever existed. I like to think that God is dead, and died giving life to the universe. This, of course, defines God as the supreme being and source of all energy in the universe, though not a beardy old chap in a top hat. (I always imagined God wearing a top hat, don't know why.)

SWG that wasn't needed, take these funny comments to Open Topic, this is for deep-thought debates, not silly assumptions...

As for God not exactly existing, I am not exactly into thinking God is real, if he were, then all these horrible tragedies wouldn't have happened, because if he wanted us dead, he'd already have done it, and if he doesn't want humanity destroyed he's doing a shitty job as far as I see it.

Now could Time and Space make the universe? if so then to me theres your awnser to the question.

Does that involve you seeing Time and Space as entities, or just as time and space? If they are just time and space, then where did they get the energy from? And if they're entities, then where did they live/form an quasi-existential paradox before the universe? Not to mention where they could have got the knowledge of how to do it and the basic idea from. The universe is a really strange thing, so how does one suddenly think it up?

I think we've reached a fair conclusion here: if God exists, he's a bastard.

If he exists, and if he's like all of you say: a sick bastard; then couldn't he just be making us suffer because he's a sick bastard? Really, if he wanted us dead, he could just rain meteors on every square inch of earth, but he may have a sense of humor, being a sick bastard, he must like watching us suffer.

Hello everyone. I am back.

some nice quotes from the Dune universe about religion:

"Religion is the emulation of the adult by the child. Religion is the encystment of past beliefs: mythology, which is guesswork, the assumptions of trust in the universe, those pronouncements which men have made in search of personal power, all of it mingled with shreds of enlightenment. And always the ultimate unspoken commandment is "Thou shalt not question!" But we question. We break that commandment as a matter of course. The work to which we have set ourselves is the liberating of the imagination, the harnessing of imagination to humankind's deepest sense of creativity."

"When law and duty are one, united by religion, you never become fully conscious, fully aware of yourself. You are always a little less than an individual."

"Is your religion real when it costs you nothing and carries no risk? Is your religion real when you fatten upon it? Is your religion real when you commit atrocities in its name? Whence comes your downward degeneration from the original revelation?"

i think those are very nice ways of putting it. i have to get my hands on every dune book now...

A-men to that.

Religion is simply a way of live your life. It doesn't need to make you believe on anything at all, although most of the religions may make you believe on unknown things to convince you to follow their rules.

Don't you just love how Christians say "God doesn't interfere because he gave us free will" yet if you read "The Tower of Babble" (or whatever it's called) "God" intervenes and stops us building the tower?

according to our determinedly dopey Prime Minister Mr Brown, Obama also has a beach in Normandy named after him. If that can't win you an election, what can?

You seem to be suggesting that you didn't expect the Bible to be intensely hypocritical!? :shiftee:

The same applies to after the great flood, and what he did to the cities of Sodom and Gomorroh (excuse spellings).

Bible is a book written by humans (prophets) that reports stories that are meant to teach you lessons. Since it is a book written by humans, it is bound to have mistakes, distortions and incorrect information. Romans made christians believe that everything written on bible happened. And I'm sure that Darwin and many others have proven them wrong.

Anyone can prove the Bible wrong. The challenge is proving it right. Also, the Romans were not responsible for making people believe the Bible's every word as fact. Emperor Constantinius' first version of Roman Christianity did not take the Bible literally, or so I am given to understand. That came later with adaptations to try and convince people of different faiths to join. It was sort of an 'our god's better than your god' thing.
