Well, the new CEO of Virgin has finally said it. Net neutrality is apparently bullshit and Virgin is gonna launch a high speed service that will be available to all websites who are willing to pay, meanwhile everyone else will be tucked into the so-called "slow line". This has created an enourmous tsunami of rage across the internets due to the potential adoption of this by other ISPs if Virgin Media successfully pushes this through. I can't say I am too happy about this since I am indeed using Virgin internet services to access the world, and if this actually goes through most websites I view might just become extremely slow for me due to the whole bandwidth shift.

Now the movie detailing it is suffering from severe paranoia induction, but here's the link anyways:

http://stopvirgin.movielol.org/

The only problem I see with this is that no amount of e-drama will change a corporate decision unless they genuinely have something to lose. Rather than shouting about, Virgin users should simply threaten to withdraw from the service. We all know that the best way to hurt corporations is through their pockets, simple enough.

Also as an interesting piece of trivia: it seems the US leads in the freedom department in this case. UK government is open to a double lane internet that is favouring corporate websites. The US on the other hand has a lobby that is constantly nagging the Congress to put in legislation forbidding stuff like this. UK seems to be a country of some really big contrasts recently, it does..

I've been keeping an eye on this as well. Dangerous stuff. Hopefully the next gen service called the grid will solve the issues of bandwidth and nullify the arguement.

Why should telecoms invest in bandwidth when they can just charge more for people to use their existing bandwidth, and make even more money? If they get away with this they've found a practically infinite money machine, as there's hardly any need to upgrade the bandwidth, just dedicate more and more to the people that pay them, and let the rest of the Internet get by with less and less.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

Net neutrality IS bullshit, it hasn't existed since 1994.

Matias.. net neutrality is about favouring certain websites over others in terms of bandwidth given by ISPs. It effectively boosts those websites on the faster lane while burrowing those on the slower one. It's not bullshit because it hasn't been broken yet although it is being talked about by all sorts of major western ISP pretty much *all* the time.

If the other companies get their way and restrict our internet options then Virgin should do their thing. I applaud them. Sure it'll be slow but it'll be there. It's nice to see a big company standing up for the people even if it is just to make a profit. In the end it still has the same result. So bravo Virgin. Fight the good fight. Save the internet.

But it's not saving the Internet. It's doing the opposite. If you don't have a partnership with them, you go slow and that puts off your end user. They won't come back and they'll stick to any sites that move quickly. You lose users, you lose money or a reason to run your site. Sites die without a good userbase. Your argument is silly and extremely dangerous.

Couldn't sites that rely on visitor counts for income sue net neutrality violators for damages through lost revenue?

I don't know, I want to lose my virginity, but this way doesn't seem right. I'd rather get to know her first and maybe take out to dinner or something :xd: .
