but by the time gandalf battles the balrog they've passed through the Khazad stairs along the ruins of the second hall and onto the bridge..... then he falls into a chasm where there is no lava, just because there is lava in one place doesn't mean it's going to be in another.... different location. And if it was as reflection of fire from water then the reflection would have that dappled effect as the ripples on the water scatter the light.

Anyway, the bloom effect...it's going in the right direction, but the rock parts should be black, not red :p

It's only a test phase, the bloom is way too much on it at the moment. If I figure a way to scale fire or indeed to add it in a believable context I will, the chasm itself graduates from a 1000feet to 0 at its lowest point, which is why I brought the lava up so high. If you guys can think of good places for stone textures etc just link em here. I'll see what I can do about the coloration of the stairs, they themselves are only test objects, the real ones will have chunks missing etc. I hadn't realised how much work it was to make something and then make it look old and decaying.

Could you create a fire object with a looping 'flame' anim, Ed? Then resize and place where needed.

That's cool! And that photo of 2playgames, the stuff down there looks a lot like water, it looks like it reflects a fire!

I think putting lava in quantifies the depth and the cool thing about the khazad-dum area is that it seemed bottomless. I think I'd make it deeper and maybe have a dark water texture with a reflection plane. Then add some torches in so that it's reflected in the water, as well as the flame from the balrog and you should have something a bit like the movie, rather than it looking like a volcano.

....rather than it looking like a volcano.

That's what I'm chiefly afraid lava will do. Make the Mines of Moria look like a volcano's guts. Last I knew, the only volcano in LOTR was way south in Mordor......

You are right of course, the middle ground will be to place loads of fire objects around the base of the pit and add water with a reflection plain to bring up the flames, although it annoys me greatly to simply put fire on rock without a source point as such. Does anyone know if there is an official story as to the wakening of the Balrog or is it just mentioned, I think I'd like to play around with that notion if there isn't.

Well, the premise for his awakening is that the Dwarves delved "too deep and too greedily." I imagine that it was a Dwarf miner who accidentally whacked the Balrog on the head with his pickaxe.

I think it was more a mining expedition broke into whatever chamber it had locked itself away in after the War of Wrath.

While taking a break from serious modelling for a while I've come up with this, this is my 3rd attempt at Yoda from Star Wars, my first attempt which I was really proud of was obliterated in the virus crash of August 2008... (RIP Yoda 2008). This attempt is really only a head model, because I used the body of gandalf to make up the robes, I gave him a dress robe, similar to the one he wore in SW:ESB and Episode 1 cos it's easier than animating legs and robes seperately. Though if you guys would like to see a more refined and finish product I can make the jump suit and robes seperately. It comes in at just under 2000polys. I put a shader on the eyes to give them alittle life and shininess. I hope you guys like it, took me most of the day to make.

Thanks guys, I hope to make some anims for it soon, am needing a break from all the LOTR stuff atm, have done overkill for last few months again. :thumbsupsmiley:

Lauri - I'll set about making the skin a lighter green, I realised it was more neutral but I suck at photofiltering and took the face from a wallpaper with a green saber glow on it.
