I went to a holocaust memorial tonight...and...well...

Lest We Forget

At first the sun was shining,
The wind was blowing,
The smell of the sea,
The taste of freedom,
Filled my mind,
And lightened me,

Then they told us,
Wear these badges,
Paint your house,
Or we’ll take you away,
But what did we care?
We were proud to wear them,
And it was better than the alternative,

Then they told us,
Live separately,
You have your own part of town,
Now we grumbled,
But not too loud,
We did as told,
It was better than the alternative,

Then they said,
We need your body,
They took us off to the slave camps,
Separated from our family,
To concentration camps they brought us,
And now we did complain our hearts out,
But they had no cause to listen,
We were still alive,
It was better than the alternative,

Then the gas chambers a calling came,
Into the dark and shadows,
They took my mother and my father,
And yet, I was still alive,
Which seemed better than the alternative,

And now, with heritage long forsaken,
Mother and father long ago taken,
Dreams crushed, hopes dashed,
What left have I in the world?
Perhaps when darkness finally comes a callin,
It’ll find itself a welcome,
After all,
How could it be worse than the alternative?

There's a news article the paper did on the service...you can read a bit about it if you want. I'm the one in the middle of the picture, if anyone cares.

Sorry about double post...thought that should be added though.

that was very moving, a very mature subject to tackle, I enjoyed it very much particularly the the summation at the end of every verse "it was better than the alternative" - keep up the good work. At times I feel its time to learn from our past and move on, sometimes history can be an anchor to negativity and that sometimes can be the case with the holocaust however you tackled it in a very mature way, understanding the evilness of it. It is important we remember the persecution of jews during that horrible time but it is also important to remember not only them but the persecution of other societies for the their race, disability, sexuality or creed. For example the persecution that the Afrikaans suffered during times of slavery, the native Americans killed persecuted and drove from their lands, any country that has been occupied or oppressed, the importance of the holocaust is to bring to light this persecution which for countless centuries went ignored. Anyway before this becomes a sort of inarticulate rant, I'm going to leave it there, good going!!! :p
