I'm intrested in what everyone thinks of sites where you have to pay to use them. A good example is gamespot, where you have to pay to download some of the videos.

I ask this because i'm thinking of using a pay system for resources. You pay £2 a year and you get to download as many W3D models, voxels, maps or shps as you like. This money would then go to the people who made the resource.

This is just a early thought. Suggestions are welcome.

I doubt it work, because it would be huge hassle to sign up, and we'd have to make sure the resources are perfect quality. And I wonder how EA would feel about us making a profit off their game (We'd probably have to make the stuff available as a .gmax file, but with all the bones and stuff ready, so people will just have to convert it, and we're not using their property)

...But if you did it I would make a crapload of resources for Generals, and all really really high quality stuff. How much USA dollars does two pounds equate to?

Its worth looking into. Maybe talk to some of the people who do that for The Sims and see how they did it.

Thing is though, it'd be difficult to manage wouldn't it?
I mean, someones got to check that the maker gets the money.
Also, people would just go elsewhere or give up. If i'd found that all the community's resource sites were pay sites, no matter how small the amount, I would never have started modding. Simply because I would have had no way of paying (i'm 15). I know how much money you put into this Detail, but I don't think there's really any way of making some of it back.

I dont like the idea. There arent many people that would pay to have something done that could be free.

Which is why you'd have to market it to the playing community.

I know I keep saying this, but the Sims people did it, and its entirely possible to make Sim skins and stuff on your on, and sites like the Well Dressed Sim and the Mall of the Sims have a ton of paying subscribers.

If i realy thought i was going to make money i would buy some advertising to realy spread the word.

The Sims is a familie game where which mums site down and play, mums have no idea how to make a skin so thay buy them. mums don't play Generals.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

lol i was wondering what was going on with those

by the way, i'd never pay for a website's content... sure I've ordered stuff online, but there's hardly anything on a paysite that I can't find for free somewhere else. Hell I've yet to buy a game with a subscription fee... although SW Galaxies and Planetside are tempting... no matter how much it may be worth it, I've always been a pretty conservative person with my money and I'm not about to blow it just to get some stuff I could make/learn on my own.

I dont play generals much, but I think havin to pay for something that was made free aside from time is useless. Its not really something that should be done, yet thousands of people do it and make money from people that think that expensive programs were used to make them and whatnot. I dont like the idea at all. I've seen gamespot where you have to pay to download hl2 movies when I can just as easily download them for free from another place.

sure, I'ld love to be paid for helping people mod RA2/YR and TS, but I doubt we could legally sell resources....

and I dount enough people would pay for resources when they could get them for free elsewhere to bother setting the pay thing up.

like kravvitz said i wouldn't mind being paid for modding, but I would never pay for downloads. I would do whatever possible (not to the extremes) to not pay for what i want. anyway, i don't think this will happen, and even if origin does go through with it, I won't support it.

BTW- Detail, great why to prove the difference between "the sims' and "generals"

This was just an idea. If we could make money it would realy help Origin grow.
