No, the water in spring looks like jelly. Nothing compared to RA3.

Realism is so overrated it isn't even funny. You already know what happens in reality, how is that entertaining...?

man... i cant believe how much you are all complaining...

if you dont like it dont buy it.

the water effects are fantastic, the game looks pretty nice.

just cause it isnt how you wanted it doesnt instantly make it a bad game :p

also, i havent ever seen another rts that lets you build on water...

actually, can anyone show me some? i want to compare them to RA3....

You should really look around more. RA3 definetly isn't the first.

MAX, a 12 1/2 year old RTS made by Interplay, offers the option to build any structure on water.
I still play it occasionally. The learning curve and bugs killed that game for the general public tho.

My RTS game collection is quite small, but I'd be very surprised if there is no other RTS game since MAX and TA that succesfully included water as a strategic element.

The water effects aren't that good.

Name me one RTS with better water effects.

...

I thought so. There isn't

At least BfME 2 tried to actually simulate some form of water. In this, it's just a flat sheet with a simple shader and objects (units) stuck on it. It's shit, and in the videos they haven't even implemented any form of effects other than a ripple (normal map multiplied / added to current normals). It's basically the exact same technique as Dawn of War, but with better drawn textures (DoW's water textures were really, really poor). I wouldn't be ranting so much if it wasn't for the millions of "oh my god, look at the water effect!!!!1" posts I've seen everywhere.

Empire Total War, on the other hand, has demonstrated a naval model, with fully dynamic waves (animated and physical), with the full whack - it even varies significantly for weather, if the spiel is to be believed. So there you go, that's one example of an RTS with considerably better water effects. It has a similar release date too.

Empire: Total War isn't an RTS, it's an RTT; it's a very different game, with a very different playing style. You really can't compare E:TW and RA3 the same way you can compare RA3 to StarCaft 2 or Halo Wars. RA3 has far superior water effects to both those games (considering neither StarCaft 2 or Halo Wars focus on naval battles to any extent).

It's similar enough to govern the same kind of visual requirements.

Want to knock up a shader that'll do pretty much exactly what you see there? it'd probably take around 2 hours for non graphics programmer.

StarCraft 2's visuals are also really dated. It also doesn't even have water as far as they've showed thus far.

I don't even know what you're referring to with HW.

HW = Halo Wars. I'll fix my previous post.

Just becuase it's simple doesn't mean it can't look good.

The thing is it doesn't look good. It looks average.

Anyway, enough ranting on that. Something is wrong if the only thing you think is good is the water.

Amen.

At least the new video appears to have anti-aliasing - unless it was downsized of course, but we'll not know.

Curiously I've just noticed, if EALA have access to UE3, and this game doesn't have AA, that would actually suggest to me that their "new engine" is in fact UE3, and not an iteration of SAGE. (UE3 lacks AA, because Dx9 is unable to properly access the floating point colour buffer used in the deferred lighting solution).

RNA is a new graphics engine. I'm pretty sure the code underneath is still SAGE.

Well, when it comes to writing an expository essay about counter-insurgent tactics, I'm of the old school. First you tell them how you're going to kill them. Then you kill them. Then you tell them how you just killed them.

Some of us prefer our games to at least be partly believable.

So, what part of time travelling, prism technology, and tesla coils was partly believable?

Time travel and tesla coils are close to the imagination and pretty cool. While they're fiction, the concept is recognisable, making it less absurd.
Prims tech was just crap and I'm glad it's gone. (It is gone, isn't it?)

Launching bears... well, I got a good imagination, so I can manage on that part, but it doesn't particularly strike me as cool in any way.

I'm holding final judgement untill I played the game. In general I find trailers don't give a good picture of what a game is like.

At first I agreed with Ambershee about the water. Now I've seen the higher quality version of the trailer I'd say the quality is decent enough.
Then again, my graphical standards aren't high. I've played Dune 2 and strangely enough I enjoyed it despite the graphics not looking anywhere near the real thing.
If I want to see picture perfect stuff I go outside and take a walk in the park. If I want to play a game, I expect the gameplay to be good and the visual picture to be good enough not to get in the way of that.

I don't think the bears use guns, they just maul people, like the attack dog in RA/RA2. It's just a way for the soviets to be different instead of just having a different palette for the dog.
